**Duties and Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the ISSO Manager, the Coordinator contributes to a small but dynamic team whose mandate is to support international and exchange students as well as global engagement for the student community at Carleton University.

The Coordinator is responsible for developing international student support programs and supporting the student exchange experience at Carleton. In consultation with the Manager, the Coordinator will design, develop and implement information services, orientation activities, social and volunteer programs and will provide supervision to related student staff or volunteers working to make the Canadian and Carleton University experience of international students successful and enriching. Fostering a sense of internationalization across campus, the Coordinator will collaborate on student events with other departments, student groups and community organizations to create inclusive programming that encourage participation from all within the Carleton community. The Coordinator will act as a liaison between students and university departments as appropriate and will bring a strong background in cross cultural understanding, experience in exchanging knowledge across cultures, diversity in the workplace, cross cultural communications, facilitation and event planning for delivery of related workshops or training modules. As required, the Coordinator will provide advice, guidance and/or will develop training workshops for departments and campus organizations who are working on international programs, cross cultural training or student issues.

The incumbent participates in identifying and analyzing the needs of international students, and designing research-informed tools, programs and online resources on Carleton’s online learning management tools as well as documentation that allow for successful international student integration and retention. Developing and interpreting survey results and comfortable interpreting statistics and using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The incumbent’s role is to establish strategic partnerships with stakeholders on and off campus to ensure that, students’ needs are being addressed. With the goal of promoting student success, retention, and graduation, the incumbent will provide support for international students in order to facilitate engagement, development, and sense of well-being. The incumbent will also provide support to the Manager as needed and contribute to the operation of the ISSO.

**Qualifications**:
**The incumbent must possess the following qualifications**:

- Strong experience in cross cultural understanding (theory and practice) with proven abilities in program organization and development, supervision, and training
- Knowledge of appropriate international student programming, training and cultural influences related to teaching theory is important
- Incumbent must be skilled in balancing administrative, interpersonal and programming priorities
- International experience is strongly recommended with consideration to those who have lived and studied or worked overseas in a non-western context, in order to provide cultural expertise when addressing the pedagogical, social and career needs of international students
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Ability to take initiative and leadership roles
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Education and training in the area of diversity, inclusion and knowledge acquisition, facilitation, developing learning outcomes for program implementation and strong experience in developing and leading volunteer programs is important
- Exhibit flexibility, which includes the commitment to providing services outside regular hours
- Proven ability to build rapport and work effectively with varied and regularly changing student leaders and service providers
- A spirit of co-operation, tact, and sensitivity are integral to meeting the needs of this diverse population
- High energy and the proven ability to motivate others
- Ability to respond to constant and unpredictable pressures is crucial
- Be patient and non-judgemental
- Organization, communication and intercultural/interpersonal skills with an ability to work with and relate to students, student staff, university staff and faculty
- Sound judgement
- Ability to understand and advise on complex situations
- Attention to detail
- Ability to work on detailed spreadsheets, initiative, as well as, tact, diplomacy and a high level of interpersonal skills are mandatory
- Be required to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends such as the Labour Day long weekend during fall orientation
- Excellent crisis management, intervention and problem-solving skills
- Experience living and working in non-western cultures and second language knowledge considered an asset while cross-cultural understanding is essential
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
