**About this Role**

The Communications Manager will be responsible for developing and executing the internal and external communications strategy on behalf of Shelter Movers. This role will measure success by leveraging the media to grow awareness of the organization and our services. Reporting to the Director of Marketing & Communications (MarComm), the Communications Manager has an integral role within the national team and supports SM chapters and functions.
- Job Type: 35 hours/week (flexible, some evening & weekend availability as needed)
- Salary: $50,000 - $60,000 per annum based on skill and experience
- Location: Remote, preference for those based in Edmonton or Calgary, AB.

A national charitable organization that provides free moving and storage services to individuals and families fleeing abuse. Shelter Movers is the only service of its kind in Canada.
- Powered by over 2,000 volunteers across Canada, Shelter Movers currently runs chapters in Greater Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Nova Scotia, Vancouver, Waterloo and soon, the Prairies
- Since 2016, Shelter Movers has completed over 5,000 moves, transitioning women and their children to lives free of abuse.

**What you'll be responsible for**:

- Develop and execute proactive strategies to drive positive traditional media coverage and supports further engagement via social media
- Produce and distribute a daily media monitoring report to track GBV sector news
- Lead media outreach initiatives, including pitching, drafting press releases, handling inbound media inquiries, etc.
- Create key messages and briefing documents to support media requests
- Provide training to national and chapter spokespeople for media interviews and speaking opportunities
- Cultivate relationships with local and national media to raise awareness of the organization and our services
- Maintain an up-to-date database of local and national media contacts via media monitoring or through direct contact
- Ensure further dissemination of media coverage to key stakeholders via social media, website, reports, newsletters, etc.
- Lead the planning and execution of media events targeted at key stakeholders such as news conferences, media tours, and announcements
- Liaise with government communications counterparts to ensure the alignment of public messaging, as needed
- Write and edit a range of communications tools and resources, including fact sheets, brochures, articles, website content, reports, correspondence, presentations, etc.
- Lead internal communication initiatives targeting staff, volunteers and board members
- Anticipate, mitigate and manage issues affecting the reputation of the organization
- Monitor, analyze, and report on campaign performance
- Share insights, best practices, trends and provide support to chapters
- Assist the Marcomm team with campaign research, planning, and execution
- Maintain a database of information and statistics relevant to the Gender-based Violence (GBV) sector
- Develop and deliver presentations and participate in meetings and workshops
- Liaise with external agencies, consultants, and vendors as needed
- University degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Minimum 5 years of public relations and/or communications experience either in an agency or corporate environment; Non-for-profit experience is an asset.
- Solid understanding of the media landscape on a national, regional, and local level
- Established and relevant media relationships, particularly in Alberta, a definite asset
- Exceptional copywriting, editing and proof-reading skills in English (French is an asset)
- The ability to adjust external communication style to maintain a brand voice that is supportive, approachable, trauma-informed, anti-racist, anti-oppressive, client-centered, LGBTQI+ inclusive and accurate in all areas of communication
- Strong understanding of current and emerging social media channels and the relevance of these to the media and stakeholders
- Experience using Hootsuite or Meta Business Suite to publish content and engage audiences on social media platforms
- Familiarity with Google Workspace, MailChimp, Wordpress, and CanadaHelps is a plus
- Ability to analyze data, insights, and trends and adjust course as needed
- Strong organizational skills and reliable work habits
- A long-term interest in the GBV sector
- Strong ethics and strives for integrity and excellence in all areas of responsibility
- The ability to prioritize tasks and shift priorities as necessary
