Reporting to the Executive Director, People, the Director, Occupational Health &; Safety oversees the strategic planning and operational requirements of Providence Health Care's (PHC) Occupation Health &; Safety service. The position leads the development, implementation and evaluation of occupational health, disability management safety and wellness programs, services and initiatives throughout Providence Health Care. Develops, sustains and enhances the health and safety of the workplace environment by developing and delivering effective health, safety and wellness programs that meet the unique needs of staff, volunteers, students and physicians. Represents PHC externally with industry, government and regulatory agencies, and ensures the organization's compliance with regulatory requirements. Advocates changes to regulation/legislation on behalf of the organization and mediates dispute resolutions concerning health, safety and claims issues with unions, WorkSafeBC, Healthcare Benefit Trust, Canada Life and other relevant stakeholders/fee for service providers. Builds effective relationships with PHC Senior Leaders, Director and Managers and manages relationships with Occupational Health &; Safety leaders at BC Health Authorities and partner organizations. Ensures the effective direction and implementation of related provincial and government directives/initiations. Participates on joint union/management committees and task groups at a senior level. Manages the overall department budget and seeks alternate sources of funding or revenue generation opportunities as appropriate. As a member of the Human Resources Leadership Team, plays an integral role in the development and delivery of the corporate human resources strategies, policies, processes and services.
**Qualifications / Skills and Education**:
Education
Masters Degree in a Health and Safety discipline plus seven (7) to ten (10) years of innovative, progressive health and safety and disability claims management experience, including five (5) years management experience, preferably within a large, complex unionized environment or health care setting, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of health and safety legislation, regulations, statutes, and collective agreements.
Comprehensive knowledge of corporate wellness principles and best practices.
Comprehensive knowledge of disability claims management.
Knowledge of current health care issues and trends.

Leads the planning, development and integration of a strategic occupational health function to support and facilitate organizational initiatives. Develops and executes annual goals and objectives that align with the vision and strategic directions of the People Services team and wider PHC goals and objectives.
Leads the development and implementation overall PHC occupational health programs, policies and processes and ensuring compliance with all organizational, legislative and collective agreement obligations, policies and standards and integration with PHC business needs.
Ensures effective communication and instruction to PHC leaders and other People Services staff in the ongoing administration of related agreements, standards and policies.
