Reporting to the HR Occupational Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor works collaboratively to promote occupational health and safety across PHS projects and programs. This position acts as a resource providing consultation, guidance, and support on health and safety issues to the Human Resources team, management team and staff. The Health and Safety Advisor completes incident investigations, trains managers and staff on safety practices, conducts inspections and audits, addresses safety concerns, and promotes a safety culture to eliminate occupational injuries and illness.
PHS Community Services Society provides housing, harm reduction, health promotion and health care to vulnerable communities. Our supportive housing and low barrier programs provide refuge, services and advocacy for those who are homeless or poorly served elsewhere due to their physical health, mental health, behaviour, substance use, or involvement with the criminal justice system. PHS is a renowned innovator and a leader in harm reduction and health care for marginalized communities. PHS Housing actively seeks to find an alternative to eviction in every situation.
PHS is recognized as North American leaders in low barrier housing and harm reduction services. Engages staff and managers in the analysis of staff safety data. Supports in the development of action plans to address issues and ensures ongoing active manager and staff involvement in the maintenance and development of safety systems.
Participates in the planning, development and implementation of PHS-wide safety policies, programs, and procedures to ensure safe operations and compliance with required standards and practices.
Supports in safety audits and the identification of safety training needs; develops and delivers training manuals, programs, safe operating procedures, and competency-based testing systems; collects and retains applicable data.
Works with regulatory agencies such as WorkSafe BC and liaises with area-specific WSBC officers.
Conducts on-site visits to projects and programs to connect with staff and managers on safety concerns.
Assists managers with completing Violence Risk Assessments and employee safety surveys.
Reviews WorkSafe claims, Unusual Occurrences, and safety reports with managers. Assists managers to develop action plans to address safety issues and prevent future incidents.
Manages the collection, follow-up, tracking, and record keeping of incident investigations, corrective action plans, as well as compliance orders and reports completed by supervisors and management.
Manages the PHS Safety inbox. Updates OH&S documentation and creates safe work procedures and exposure control plans.
Participates in workplace safety inspections to ensure the inspections are completed regularly and on schedule.
Promotes safety awareness through on-going education and training of staff.
Diploma in the field of occupational health and safety
Minimum of three years of experience in the health and safety field
Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation
Experience identifying needs, planning and providing guidance and advice on safety initiatives
Ability to build relationships with managers and staff and exercise discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive health and safety issues
Demonstrated facilitation and training skills
Level 1 Occupational First Aid ticket or higher
WHMIS training and certification
Criminal Record Check must be completed prior to employment
Schedule: Mon-Friday, 9am-5pm - some flexibility may be required
Temporary, Full-time
Location: On site - remote work isn’t available
