Explosives Asset Manager

As the **Explosives Asset Manager**, you will oversee all aspects of explosives operations in Ontario, including plant builds, operational facilities, explosives trucks, and magazine storage sites. This role requires a strong focus on compliance, safety, asset management, and leadership of operational teams.
**Leadership & Employee Management**
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate employees working in explosives plants, transportation, and storage operations.
- Ensure staff competency through training, certification tracking, and performance management.
- Promote a strong safety culture by leading toolbox talks, inspections, and audits.
- Assign work priorities, monitor productivity, and ensure adherence to safe operating procedures.
**Explosives Plant Construction & Operations**
- Oversee planning, construction, commissioning, and operation of new explosives plants in Ontario.
- Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and regulators to ensure builds meet Explosives Act and OHSA requirements.
- Implement preventative maintenance programs for plant equipment, processing systems, and support utilities.
- Monitor plant production, quality, and safety performance, initiating corrective actions as needed.
**Explosives Transportation (Trucks & Mobile Units)**
- Manage a fleet of explosives delivery trucks, emulsion pumpers, and powder trucks.
- Ensure vehicles comply with Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations, including pre-op inspections and driver certifications.
- Oversee scheduling, dispatch, and tracking of explosive deliveries to job sites.
- Conduct audits and coordinate maintenance programs to maximize reliability and safety.
**Magazine Storage Sites**
- Oversee construction, operation, and security of explosive magazines in compliance with Explosives Regulations, 2013.
- Ensure accurate inventory control, documentation, and traceability of explosives from receipt to end use.
- Conduct inspections to maintain fire, security, and environmental compliance standards.
- Implement effective misfire reporting and explosive return procedures.
**Compliance, Safety & Quality**
- Ensure full compliance with the **Explosives Act**, **Explosives Regulations, 2013**, **Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act**, and Ontario’s **Occupational Health and Safety Act**.
- Maintain relationships with regulators (NRCan, Transport Canada, MLITSD) and represent the company during audits and inspections.
- Develop, implement, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Safe Work Procedures (SWPs), and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning.
- Ensure environmental, health, and safety requirements are integrated into all operations.
**Asset & Business Management**
- Manage budgets for explosives assets, plant builds, maintenance, and operations.
- Develop capital expenditure plans for new builds, upgrades, and fleet replacements.
- Track asset lifecycle, depreciation, and performance to support business planning.
- Ensure customer satisfaction through reliable service delivery, product quality, and technical support.
**Qualifications & Requirements - Explosives Asset Manager**
**Education & Certifications**
- Post-secondary education in Engineering, Mining, Explosives Technology, or related field (or equivalent industry experience).
- Valid **Blaster’s Certificate** (Ontario or equivalent provincial jurisdiction) - preferred.
- Valid **Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)** training and certification.
- **WHMIS 2015** training and certification.
- **Supervisor Health & Safety Awareness Training** (Ontario OHSA requirement).
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation considered an asset.
- First Aid/CPR and other applicable safety certifications.
**Experience**
- Minimum 7-10 years’ experience in the explosives industry, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory or management role.
- Proven experience in **explosives plant operations** (construction, commissioning, or management).
- Hands-on experience with **explosives truck operations** (powder trucks, emulsion pumpers, or MPUs).
- Strong knowledge of **explosives magazine management** including inventory control, security, and compliance.
- Demonstrated success in **asset management**, budgeting, and lifecycle planning.
- Experience liaising with regulatory agencies (NRCan, Transport Canada, MLITSD, Ministry of Environment, etc.).
**Technical Knowledge**
- Comprehensive knowledge of:
