**Duties**:
Under the supervision of a government research scientist and research technician, the selected student will be responsible for a suite of duties, including gear organization and preparation for outgoing chartered flights, and participation in daily camp activities with all team members (cooking, cleaning up, preparing camp and infrastructure). The student will participate in daily scientific monitoring of thick-billed murres (capture, sampling, banding, nest monitoring, band reading), and presence of other species present on the colony. The student will be responsible for participating in data entry and proofing. The student will be responsible for helping in the organization and storage of field gear and samples after the field season is completed.
**Work environment**:
The Wildlife Research Division of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) based out of the National Wildlife Research Centre on the campus of Carleton University in Ottawa, allows for close collaboration between government researchers and the students and faculty of Carleton University. This field-based student research assistant position will provide the opportunity to work at Coats Island, NU, an Arctic ECCC field camp located on a small, remote island, only accessible by charted flights. The student will be working with a diversity of team members, including researchers and biologists at Environment and Climate Change Canada, faculty and students at Carleton University, and Indigenous partners. The outdoor environment will be snowy, cold, and wet, and the student will be expected to continue work, even in inclement weather. Due to the isolated nature of the field camp, the student will be in close quarters with 8 team members for the duration of the season (~8 weeks). The selected student will have access to safety gear, needed science equipment, and provided with bunk in a shared space. The working environment is friendly, collaborative, and inclusive.

**Education**:
Must be currently enrolled in a Graduate Program (Master's) with full-time student status in the Faculty of Biology at Carleton University - a recognized postsecondary academic institution. The student must have completed at least one university course in conservation biology or have conducted research in the field of conservation biology.
Degree equivalency
**Experience**:
Experience in identifying a variety of bird species by sight and sound.
Experience using optics (binoculars, scopes).
Experience recording, transcribing, and entering complex data sets.
Experience working in remote environments.
Experience working with ATV’s/snowmachines.
Experience following field protocols.
Experience banding and handling birds.
Experience monitoring individual birds in a large colony.
Operational Requirements:
First Aid, CPR/AED Level C (Wilderness First Aid preferred)
