Job Description:
Reporting to the Manager, Community and Student Affairs, the Accessibility Counsellor is responsible for facilitating the accommodation process for students with various disabilities. The incumbent will provide counselling and advocacy services to support academic success and student retention.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collects and evaluates documentation to establish eligibility for support services.- Interviews, advises, and provides disability-related counselling, working with students to develop strategies that normalize situations of both an academic and socio-emotional nature.- In consultation with students, develops and implements individualized student plans to ensure College policies and practices are consistent with the Ontario Human Rights Code, AODA and other relevant legislation.- Maintains confidential records of accommodation requests, action taken and effectiveness of the accommodations and supports required.- Liaises appropriately with faculty to ensure that support and services are available in the classroom, while also considering the confidentiality needs of the student.- Advocates within the College and with external agencies for resources, rights, and responsibilities concerning persons with disabilities.- Presents disability education sessions for campus departments.- Participates in departmental projects and college meetings, transition programs and other initiatives.- Contributes to a positive, cooperative team environment.
Required Qualifications- Masters degree in a discipline related to disability issues (i.e. Psychology, Disability Studies, Counselling, Social Work, Special Education, Occupational Therapy, Speech-Language Pathology).- Minimum two (2) years post-Master’s experience within the post-secondary setting and with demonstrated experience in direct counselling/consulting students with disabilities.- Demonstrated experience interpreting documentation and creating accommodation plans for students with disabilities in a post-secondary environment.- Demonstrated experience assisting and accommodating students with a wide range of disabilities, including students with Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Acquired Brain Injury, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Mental Health, Medical conditions, Visual Impairments, ADHD/ADD, etc.- Must be able to demonstrate in-depth understanding of disability related documentation, including psycho-educational assessments and assessments of functional limitations; must be able to recommend and develop accommodation plans.- Working knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code, the AODA and other relevant legislation in the post-secondary context.- Knowledge of adult education theory and practice.-
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and strong interpersonal skills required.- Excellent leadership, customer service and creative thinking skills.- Excellent analytical, counselling, reasoning, conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.- Must have strong commitment to providing quality professional services.- Enthusiastic team player with a demonstrated ability to work both collaboratively and independently and display a high degree of initiative.- Ability to work a flexible work schedule.- Willingness to travel to regional campuses is an asset.
