**What You'll Need for This Job**
- Instructs swimming lessons in accordance with YMCA Aquatics SAM Standards, having prepared lesson plans accordingly, and supports members and program participants in achieving their goals.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps participants and families connect with each other and the YMCA; and encourages parent or caregiver involvement.
- Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers program participants and families to other programs.
- Maintains records as required (e.g., attendance, progress reports).
- Receives regular feedback during swimming lessons gracefully and applies feedback immediately to help improve program quality in swimming lessons. Feedback provided by but is not limited to in-water coaching, audits and team huddles.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures, pool standards and best practices; responds to situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports or recommendations as required.
- Ensures YMCA Aquatics SAM standards are consistently met or exceeded and supports the lead instructor/coordinator in responding to service issues with possible solutions in a timely manner.
- Is an active in-water swim instructor - Role models and consistently applies safety rules, policies, guidelines, in the aquatics area.
- Puts out and puts away class equipment in an organized manner. Reports damaged equipment.
- Trains and supervises class volunteers as assigned.
- Supports the department, branch and association in implementing and achieving goals.

- Physically perform all skills required of a swim instructor.
- Able to handle difficult situations and customer complaints with confidence.
- Able to prioritize many tasks on an ongoing basis; organized and able to follow through.
- Good decision-making capability and able to be interrupted frequently.
- Is a mentor and role model for participants, staff, and volunteers.
- Can accomplish administrative and maintenance tasks accurately and in a timely manner.
