Role: The Aquatics Instructor assists in the delivery of high-quality services in assigned Aquatics programs and services of the Aquatic center. The instructor will improve the member’s experience and instruct a variety of swim levels within the YMCA Swim program.
- Working Relationships: The Aquatics Instructor is directly accountable to the Aquatics Coordinator and the Aquatics Supervisor. The instructor is also accountable to the staff team as a whole, the members, volunteers, the public for successful delivery of quality programs and services.
- Accountability/Responsibilities:
- Relationship development: Role model recruitment and retention of volunteers and members. Maintain good interpersonal staff and volunteer relationships.
- Be an active participant within the staff team to reach volunteer recruitment goals. Role model best practices daily by interacting with members in the facility.
- Support the volunteers and hold them accountable to the delivery of high quality services through excellent relationships with members.
- Address member complaints and issues in a timely manner.
- Check the communication logbook at the start of each shift and communicate problems, concerns and ideas.
- Ensure administrative duties related to programs and members are accurately and effectively completed as assigned
- Follow non-negotiable standards at all times.
- Maintain up to date training and certifications.
- Aquatic Program Instruction: Deliver high quality services through excellent relationships with members.
- Provide quality instruction in aquatic class
- Develop lesson plans for assigned classes.
- Program delivery should demonstrate evidence of lesson planning.
- Relay program information and upcoming YMCA events to members.
- Enforce any YMCA policies and procedures.
- Correct unsafe activities and behaviors ensure safe and effective use of equipment by participants.
- Complete and maintain up to date rosters and attendance
- Submit report cards/progress cards (reviewed by the supervisor).
- Communicate outlined criteria to parents on parent day.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 15 years of age.
- YMCA Instructor, LSS Swim Instructor and/or Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certificates Bronze Cross award within 6 months of hire.
- Bronze Cross/Medallion Award
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- Child Welfare & Police Security Clearance
- WHMIS Certification,
- Previous experience leading Aquatic classes an asset
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to deal with difficult situations and customer complaints with confidence.
- Problem solving skills and multitasking.
- Developed coaching and team building skills
