**Job purpose**

The Machinist ensures that the scope, production process, costs, and timelines to complete jobs are well understood. This role works closely with the General Manager and Sales team to clearly define customer requirements, and with the production planning team to ensure the job can run smoothly through the shop. The Machinist plays a key role to help ensure the profitability of the company, and to meet the needs of all of Karma’s customers.

**Duties and responsibilities**

The Machinist has the following duties and responsibilities:

- operate machine tools
- maintain work stations (5S)
- monitor and service machines
- inspect work in process and document inspection results
- validate inspections of other machinists
- hand off production between shifts
- record job performance for Operational Equipment Effectiveness

The Machinist may support the Setup Technician for some setup tasks:

- assisting with the setup of machines
- assisting with the tear-down of machines after a job is complete

**Qualifications**

The Machinist must have the following minimum qualifications:

- Apprentice Machinist, Journeyperson Machinist, NAIT CNC Machinist Technician Diploma, or equivalent
- note: persons planning to enter the trade and start training within six months may be considered for this position in a junior role
- familiarity with machine tools, work holding devices, cutting tools, and inspection methods
- ability to read and understand engineering drawings (ANSI Y14 series)
- oral and written proficiency in English
- Alberta High School Diploma or equivalent
- three or more years of machining experience, including manual and CNC machining
- familiarity with the machine control systems used by Karma

**Working conditions**

The working environment can include any shift that the shop is operating, and mostly in the machine shop. Occasional work in the office may be required to assist the shop staff.

**Physical requirements**

The Machinist job is often physically demanding. There will be frequent need to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift objects such as work holding devices, tools, materials, or work in process. Visual acuity is required to use measuring instruments. The job requires standing for much of the shift.

**Salary**: $26.00-$35.00 per hour
