General Accountability

Key Accountabilities

Note: This section is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties and responsibilities - other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

Accounting Standards Review and Implementation (30%)- Continuously reviews new accounting pronouncements (exposure drafts, International Accounting Standards Board workplan) and guidance and identifies areas impacted and the magnitude of impact.- Analyzes and recommends the accounting treatment on matters of a complex nature, including new accounting standards and how new business activities should be accounted for.- Presents proposed accounting treatment to those charged approving accounting policies (Director, Financial Reporting & Budgeting, VP, Corporate Controller, Chief Financial Officer, Audit, Finance and Conduct Review Committee).- Develops and maintains corporate accounting policies and procedures.- Provides project management and oversight of the Corporation’s IFRS related implementation projects.- Ensures accounting policy implementation projects and accounting policy changes have incorporated a change assessment to determine best course of action for implementation.-
- Acts as corporate liaison for activities required with IFRS accounting standard projects, with internal actuaries and directors, internal auditors, external consultants, external auditors and Crown Investments Corporation and other Crown Corporations.

Regulatory Reporting (30%)- Coordinates the completion and submission of the quarterly and annual regulatory reporting process with all necessary contributors.- Reviews new reporting standards and documentation requirements of provincial regulators and other financial institution oversight bodies.- Maintains a corporate listing and timeline of reporting that is provided to regulatory and other financial institution oversight bodies.- Provides project management and oversight of the corporations regulatory reporting implementation projects.- Develops and maintains relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts, including auditors and regulators.

Financial Reporting, Budget and Internal Controls Maintenance (10%)- Assists with the preparation of annual and quarterly external financial statements and note disclosures.- Co-ordinates the Finance division annual budget, including staffing and other expenses (Finance, Actuarial, Company bill, Central Recovery Unit, Data & Analytics).- Remains abreast of the external financial reporting environment, and related accounting and financial reporting guidance.

Financial Research, Analysis & Performance Measurement (10%)- Analyzes complex financial situations or problems, prepares financial assessments and recommendations.- Research, analyze, makes recommendations, and develop content for finance-related board items, including presenting recommendations to committee/board when appropriate.- Performs research into changing Audit Standards and provides insight into the impact those standard changes have on SGI external audit engagements.- Performs research related to trends in financial reporting and disclosures completed as part of Management’s Discussion and Analysis in the annual report, including monitoring activities and requirements in adherence with financial reporting policies.

Leadership (10%)- Actively contributes to and supports a culture of a high performing workforce.- Participates in divisional succession plans, ensuring ongoing professional and career development and supports development in others.- Supports a culture of leadership and accountability to effectively deliver on strategic and corporate strategies.- Is actively committed to leadership development across the company, supporting team and workforce readiness through mentoring, training and developmental opportunities.

Corporate Management (10%)- Enables the success of programs and policies that are in alignment with corporate, strategic and divisional strategies.- Manages risk in area of authority.- Ensures that the Health, Safety and Emergency Management Policy is applied in area of responsibility.

Education & Experience- Four-year degree from an accredited post-secondary education institution in a relevant field of study such as Business or Commerce.- A Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.- Six years’ related experience in accounting and working with IFRS or other similar accounting reporting standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Knowledge of IFRS.- Knowledge of property and casualty insurance industry and accounting and
