The Public Guardian and Trustee is responsible to lead the office of The Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba, which is a corporation sole and a Special Operating Agency within the Department of Public Service Delivery.

The Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba is considered a last resort and is appointed by administrative bodes under provincial legislation and by the courts when there is no one else able or willing to act. Once appointed to act, The Public Guardian and Trustee protects the interests of their clients, who include some of Manitoba’s most vulnerable citizens, by providing a variety of guardian and trustee services including accounting, legal and tax matters. The services provided will depend on the type of appointment made and may include:

- Making personal and medical decisions;
- Managing clients’ financial resources;
- Acting as executor or administrator of a deceased estate and/or
- Administrating trusts.

Conditions of Employment:

- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Must be a practising member in good standing with The Law Society of Manitoba
- Must possess and maintain a satisfactory Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector search, Adult Abuse Registry Check and Child Abuse Registry Check
- Must possess and maintain a valid Full Class 5 Manitoba Drivers License
- Must be able to travel overnight several times a year

Qualifications:
**Essential**:

- Extensive experience in a legal environment including practicing law as a member of the Law Society of Manitoba or an equivalent governing body
- Extensive leadership and management experience, reflecting significant responsibility for human, fiscal and technological resources
- Significant experience in planning and achieving business goals and objectives
- Demonstrated senior level leadership and management of a government and/or public sector program that delivers public facing client services
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of the rules and duties of a trustee
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of trust fund management
- Demonstrated experience in supervising the management of common fund and segregated investment portfolios
- Demonstrated experience in managing clients as Committee and/or Substitute Decision Maker
- Demonstrated ability to promote and support diversity, equity, professionalism and respect in the workplace, and to sustain an environment that enables staff to achieve results and to develop for the future
- Superior interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships and networks within government, and with the legal profession, external agencies, community organizations, advocates, regional health authorities, and other service partners
- Superior oral communication skills with the ability to make effective public presentations
- Superior written communication skills including the ability to prepare a wide range of materials, including annual reports, business plans, submissions and reports
- Political acumen demonstrated through experience providing strategic advice to senior public service leaders on complex topics and sensitive issues
- Experience building relationships with Indigenous governments and peoples and implementing the principles of reconciliation

**Duties**:
The Public Guardian and Trustee is the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the business management of The Public Guardian and Trustee of Manitoba. The Public Guardian and Trustee is responsible for all strategic and business planning. The Public Guardian and Trustee is also responsible for operational compliance with statutory duties related to client administration, deceased estates, children’s trusts, investment of trust assets, legal instructions, human resources and business operations.
