Since 1987, Blacksmith Childcare Centre has been providing quality child care for children. A non-profit organization, run by a Board of Directors.
Licensed by the Ministry of Education, we meet and exceed the licensing standards laid out by the _Child Care Early Year Act_ annually at both our centres. We are proud that we offer a positive, nurturing, learning environment for all our children.
**Roles and Responsibilities of Board Members**
As a Board Member you will;
- Determine Blacksmith Childcare Centres mission and Program Statement, reviewing these on an annual basis
- Review policies on the agenda prior to Board meeting, editing as needed
- Contribute to the development of policies to guide the organization towards its strategic goals
- Attend all Board meetings and participate independently and knowledgeably in all deliberations of the Board
- Be available for a minimum of 2 hours a month for meetings and accessible if needed.
- Stay informed about committee matters, prepare well for meetings, review and comment on minutes and reports
- Enhance Blacksmith Childcare’s public image
- Serve as a court of appeal
- Assess the Board’s performance
- Sign a Confidentiality Agreement and ensure that confidentiality is maintained
- Participate in the long-range planning for the organization
- Select and support the Executive Director
- Approve the annual budget, audit reports, and review monthly activities as presented in the monthly financial reports
**Requirements**:
- Proven leadership experience, preferably in a board or senior management role.
- Strong skills in business development with a track record of successful negotiations.
- Experience in project management, demonstrating an ability to oversee multiple initiatives effectively.
- A commitment to process improvement, with an understanding of best practices in organizational operations.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- A passion for our mission and a desire to make a positive impact within the community.
**How do you apply?**
Blacksmith Childcare Centre is a _**non-profit organization**_ whose operations are managed by an _**Executive Director**_, and overseen by a governing _**Board of Directors.**_
- **A non-profit organization**_ is structured so that a group of committed individuals operating as the Board of Directors, constitutes the governing body of the organization. Our By-laws direct that we have a Board of 8 members consisting of both parents and community members. Within the Board, a core group consisting of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, creates the Board Executive. The remaining members attend all Board meetings, vote on issues, sit on committees, and form the governance direction of the organization.
- **The Board’s role**_ is, as mentioned, “governance”. “Governance” refers to the policies and procedures that direct the overall operation of the organization. Board members use these policies and procedures, which have been voted and passed at Board meetings, to provide the structure within which the Executive Director is expected to operate the child care centre. The Board does not play a direct role in the day-to-day operation of the centres. This is the role of the _**Executive Director**_, hired and supervised by the Board to run the centres.
