**Position Summary**:
The certified respiratory educator (CRE) is a registered respiratory therapist who has undergone additional training and certifications in chronic respiratory disease management. Their primary function is to provide disease related education and self-management skills to patients suffering from a variety of respiratory disorders. The CRE is a self-directing practitioner who functions in collaborative practice providing individual education sessions to patients with chronic respiratory diseases.
**Position Requirements**:
- Current registration as a Registered Respiratory Therapist with the College of Respiratory Therapist of Ontario
- Canadian National Certified Asthma Educator
- Minimum three (3) - five (5) years practical and related experience
- Advanced knowledge and clinical expertise related to the ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders in a broad field of respiratory health care management and delivery
- Ability to work in a strong multidisciplinary team environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated interpersonal, conflict resolution, and stress management skills
- Advanced problem solving and time management skills
- Demonstrated, and ongoing commitment to continuing education and professional development
**Preferred Requirements**:
- Membership with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists and Respiratory Therapy Society of Ontario considered an asset.
- Knowledge of legislation pertinent to the health care environment
- Basic key boarding skills and the ability to document electronically
**Responsibilities at a Glance**:
**_Therapeutic Interventions and Assessment/Intervention - 60% _**
- Work with clients/families and primary care providers to develop, implement and revise customized self-management plans.
- Provide chronic respiratory disease education to clients, families, and care providers utilizing best practice strategies and current disease related guidelines.
- Provide disease self management tools to patients to maximize quality of life and to optimize their condition for management in conjunction with primary care, reducing the need to access urgent care for non emergent issues.
- Adapt communication and interpersonal skills to deal effectively with patients and their families, co-workers, physicians, volunteers and others within our health care community.
**_Program Maintenance - 10% _**
- Responsible to help develop and maintain an effective program to address education needs, deliver relevant programs, develop guidelines for clinical practice, determine shared educational opportunities, and develop program material to support patients within the program.
- Responsible for assisting in organizing programs and making community linkages to implement guidelines-based education opportunities that will enhance competencies of health care professionals in the community.
