**Position Summary**: The Child, Youth, & Family Counsellor is responsible for providing therapeutic counselling for children, youth, and families within the scope of the referred program. Treatment may include individual counselling and/or family support depending on the needs of the young person and their family to facilitate healing within the family system. Intervention methods are strength-based and child-focused, using a variety of expressive therapies and counselling approaches.

**Hours**: This is a full-time position with a 35-hour work week, Monday-Friday, with flexible hours between 9am to 9pm, as negotiated with Team Lead - CYF Services.

**Location**: NARSF Programs - Nanaimo

**Qualifications**:

- B.A., BSW with clinical focus and advance training in trauma counselling required
- M.A., M.Ed. M.S.W., or BSc in Nursing with advanced training in trauma counselling desired
- Strong understanding of trauma, its effects and appropriate intervention strategies
- Knowledge of therapeutic relationships, trauma informed practice, clinical interventions, community resources, cross cultural issues, relevant best practices, and group process
- Knowledge of the Child, Family and Community Services Act, BC Benefits Act, Infants Act, Mental Health Act, Young Offenders Act and other acts as they apply
- Affiliation with a recognized professional body is desired
- Familiarity with community resources, ability to work in an integrated capacity with referred families and complementary resources is desired
- CPR/First Aid certification, is desired
- Must be able to pass a Criminal Record Check
- Proof of COVID-19 double vaccination record

- Interventions are informed by complete, comprehensive assessments
- Able to respect and maintain privacy and dignity of all clients and staff
- Demonstrates cultural and gender awareness
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
- Able to engage in self-reflective practice through ongoing clinical supervision

**Key Responsibilities**:

- Promote the social and emotional well-being of children/youth and families by developing and maintaining relationships of trust and cooperation with clients where appropriate
- Assist children/youth and families to access and utilize services that meet their needs to overcome barriers
- Establish and maintain coordinated working relationships with other service providers and professionals. Coordinate the integrated involvement of professionals that support the diverse needs of children/youth and families
- Screening, intake, assessment, treatment, referrals, and consultation/collaboration with other service providers for referred children/youth and their family/caregiver as relevant
- Support families to understand the impact of sexual abuse on the child/youth and encourage healthy parent-child attachment
- Health education for youth and their families experiencing eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, ARFID, binge eating disorder and where disordered eating has a significant impact on a youth’s functioning or overall wellness
- Provision of evidence-based therapeutic interventions for disordered eating i.e. CBT, DBT, EFFT, FBT informed practice
- Work cooperatively and in consultation with allied professionals (Ministry of Children and Family Development, Child Protection Investigators, Social Workers, and Mental Health Clinicians, Pediatricians, Nutritionists, Island Health, etc.)
