**The opportunity**:
As part of a student services team, the Indigenous Student Advisor will be responsible for welcoming new and current students. They will assist students to realize the maximum educational benefits available. This position will provide a full range of academic supports to students and participate in the overall culture, personal, social, financial, transitional, ad spiritual support of students.
There is an importance placed upon supporting Indigenous students. While it will take a community to care for, support, and create opportunities for our students, the Indigenous Student Advisor of the Indigenous Student Centre will be integral to advancing Indigenous students’ achievement.
**The qualifications and experience we’re looking for**:
THIS POSITION IS DESIGNATED FOR INDIGENOUS CANDIDATES. APPLICANTS MUST SELF-DECLARE ON THEIR COVER LETTER/RESUME AS INDIGENOUS (FIRST NATION, METIS AND/OR INUIT).
- Undergraduate Bachelor's degree required (preferably in social sciences or helping profession).
- Minimum three years of directly related experience involving post-secondary students required.
- Experience with the assessment of people and procedures is required.
- Experience advising students about admission requirements to a diverse selection of programs and informing about career information resources, is required.
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities (either on or off-campus) is required.
- Must have experience with traditional Indigenous practices, ceremonies, and protocols.
- Experience with student development theory, especially as it relates to Indigenous students, preferred. -Experience with student financial aid and/or community funding assistance is desirable.
- Experience with Banner (INB) Records System an Aurora Student Registration system is preferred.
- A thorough knowledge of student services offered at the University of Manitoba is preferred.
- A thorough understanding of the development approach to academic advising is preferred.
- Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, Elders, alumni, Indigenous communities, community organizations, and the public, is required.
- High degree of analytical thinking is preferred.
- Problem solving and conflict resolution skills are preferred. -Must have exceptional interpersonal skills including diplomacy and tact.
- Must have a demonstrated ability to deal with high demand and/or stressful contacts.
- Must have a strong work ethic and be willing to take the initiative to solve problems and learn new tasks.
- Attention to detail is essential.
- Must be pleasant and efficient in communication with students and staff.
- Must have excellent time management skills.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and using intermediate features associated with a Windows computer environment.
- Must be able to motivate students to lead, create, and implement new programs and services with key stakeholders from other units.
- Ability to work with students of diverse educational, age, racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, is required.
- Ability to maintain privacy and confidentiality with respect to all communications and records is required.
- Ability to develop and maintain proactive relationships with all key constituents including students, faculty and staff, administrators and members of the community, is required.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must have a genuine interest in helping students and the ability to work patiently with students. -Must have a positive attitude, enjoy challenges, and cope well with change.
- Must have a high level of commitment to The University of Manitoba community and to the mission of Indigenous Engagement.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
