Reporting to the Solid Waste Manager, the Solid Waste Supervisor will provide leadership and guidance to unionized staff and is responsible for the safe and efficient delivery of Solid Waste operations including but not limited to, the Transfer Station, curbside pickup, and landfill operations. This position is responsible for the prioritization of work assignments, site inspections, asset management, performance management, and financial management tasks.
**The Solid Waste Services Supervisor will**:
- Oversees the activities of the Transfer Facility and the landfill site
- Responsible for the supervision of all waste collection program activities
- Responsible for planning of daily work schedules and timekeeping of work crews
- Assist with the hiring and onboarding of staff for the department
- Responsible for optimizing collection routes and ensuring full utilization of manpower and equipment
- Manage, organize, and resolve unexpected factors and conditions such as workforce issues, equipment breakdown, etc.,
- Studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations. Create, revise, and implement Standard Operating Procedures for the department
- Supervise work crews performing work assignments and provide training, mentoring, monitoring and feedback
- Ensures a healthy and safe work environment in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Conducts daily tail gate meetings and all health and safety meetings
- Completes and submits: injury investigation, workplace health & safety, equipment, and property damage reports.
- Ensures daily equipment maintenance is performed and co-ordinates preventative maintenance with Fleet Manager
- Ensures compliance at Municipal landfill site and co-ordinates efforts with Solid Waste Manager
- Assist in preparation of department budget and provide recommendations for capital expenditures
- Responds in a timely manner to public questions and complaints. Determines course of action and resolution to escalated customer complaints
- Orders materials and equipment, records and reports material use on the appropriate forms as required
- Prepares tenders and/or proposals for contracted services
- Manage contractors and consultants relating to department activities
- Must be available to address issues after hours and/or on weekends
- Develops various department documents including but not limited to Standard Operating Procedures and safety policies for the department
- Will act for the Solid Waste Manager in their absence.Other duties as assigned
**Qualifications**:
- Post-secondary education in Environmental Management/Science, Sustainable Waste Management, Civil Technology or related field.
- Knowledge in the operation of landfills, transfer sites and solid waste equipment is required
- Three (3) to five (5) years of supervisory experience with demonstrated management skills
- Must possess valid ‘G’ class driver’s license or higher
- Demonstrated knowledge of waste management, recycling and resource conservation practices, methods and trends as applicable to a municipal setting
- Strong leadership and team building skills, with the ability to prioritize, mentor and manage a team
- Computer literacy skills including Microsoft Suite, database software, internet, etc.
- Working knowledge of applicable Provincial, Federal, and Municipal laws including the Environmental Protection Act, the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, and Occupational
Health & Safety Act.
- Ability to deal with sensitive or confidential matters with tact, discretion, and diplomacy.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate with all levels of staff, stakeholders and the general public.
- Well-developed organizational and time management skills with an ability to complete a high volume of work with accuracy and within prescribed deadlines in a fast pace environment with flexibility to changing priorities
