Waste Diversion Refuse Helper

As the Waste Diversion Refuse Helper you are responsible for the collection and sorting of inbound and sorted recycling material samples, performance quality control counts, and the monitoring of any disruptions in the processing operation at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF). You will also respond to emergent situations, assist in the orientation of new employees, and maintain positive working relations with staff, other departments and contractors, and the general public.
**As the **_Waste Diversion Refuse Helper_**_ _**you will**:
- Perform material audits sorting recyclables at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF).
- Create and enact a sampling schedule to ensure the proper amount of samples are performed monthly.
- Gather and record information on any issues/incidents at the MRF.
- Collect litter and debris at and around City facilities, including the Community Recycling Depots, as directed and in accordance with Safety Procedures.
- Perform data entry duties from MRF monitoring activities.
- Educate residents on accepted and non-accepted material, as well as the overall use of the facilities including assisting in educational presentations on waste diversion programs to an array of audiences from schools to apartment complexes during visits to the MRF and at locations offsite.
- Perform maintenance and upkeep of City equipment, buildings, and materials as directed.
- Perform general housekeeping of City facilities.
- Operate and maintain various types of power tools, hand tools, scales, etc. as required in accordance with departmental operating and safety procedures.
- Assist in the orientation of new employees in proper procedures, use of equipment, and MRF safety protocols.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with the MRF Contractor’s staff, other City departments, government agencies and the private sector by responding, where required, in a courteous and expeditious manner to enhance the overall operations of the City.
- In the course of carrying out daily tasks, the Waste Diversion Refuse Helper must practice established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public and property, or equipment operated, by being continuously aware of existing and new safety procedures of the department and the MRF.
- Willingness and ability for random callouts, overtime and shift work, as required.
- Perform other related duties consistent with the classification, as assigned/required.
**Your education and qualifications include**:
- Grade 10 or the equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of Customer Service.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, with mínimal supervision.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Diversion Operations - including landfill and/or transfer station facilities.
- Demonstrated ability to organize, plan effectively, set priorities and goals and take initiative.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures that is applicable to the area of work.
- Demonstrated competency in safe work practices is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Solid Waste By-Law 110/2012 and associated regulations, particularly as they relate to disposal of acceptable materials.
- Computer experience in a Windows environment is required.
- Performs within established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, co-workers, customers, property and equipment.
**Conditions of employment**:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, which may include, but are not limited to; the ability to lift up to 50 lbs, working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions, ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods and over uneven terrain for extended periods as required by work assignments.
