Your role

This one-year contract position (Producer-series showrunner) starts November 18, 2024.

A skilled journalist and audio storyteller, you have a knack for pinpointing great stories that are on people’s radar and approaching them from different perspectives and in innovative ways. You’re that special blend: a highly creative and critical thinker; a great digger and chaser who loves to play a hands-on role making great content; and a strong, conversational writer who knows how to connect with a podcast audience. This position will require you to step into a leadership role managing a host, AP support and mixer so ideally, you have experience vetting and collaborating with others.

True curiosity and an openness to diverse viewpoints and ideas are a must for this gig. So is an ability to work collegially on a small (but mighty) team, and to work well under tight deadlines. And oh yeaha sense of humour doesn’t hurt, either.

Reporting to the Executive Producer of Understood, you’ll be responsible for crafting content and series that connects with - and grows - audiences. You’ll guide editorial and nurture series that will allow CBC podcasts to continue growing. You are an experienced podcast maker and creative. Your sense of creative judgement, initiative and deadlines will help every member of the team bring their very best to the work we do.

You must have a proven track record of creating premium quality audio and podcasts that resonate with audiences and are critically revered.

In this role you:
- Ensure our projects meet the highest standards of editorial excellence and align with CBC’s Journalistic Standards & Practices.- Guide editorial direction and production schedules- Write scripts and question lines, chase guests, conduct interviews, produce host interviews, edit interviews, research and fact check- Provide feedback on scripts and audio cuts- Conceives and develops program ideas and concepts. Participates in the preparation of program objectives.- Determines the style, pace, tempo, line-up and format of the program.- Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by Management.- Guide the work of production personnel and freelance contributors- As required, performs the following tasks: direct talent, sound and/or image; select, re-write and/or edit copy or text written by others;- Ensure, in collaboration with Copyright Clearance Officers or others, the proper and accurate clearance of all material used in the program;- Determine the order and importance of various elements of a program;- Assign, coordinate and supervise the work of personnel who contribute to the program or segment for which the Producer is responsible;- Identify, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the area of assignment;- edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements.- You have a deep knowledge of and passion for the podcast industry.
