The CBC News network social/audience team is seeking a producer to create or re-purpose content for several social platforms, including Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and Snapchat Discover.
You will help to guide decisions around amplifying breaking news, investigative stories and current affairs pieces on Canada’s most-followed news social channels, including CBC News, Marketplace and The Fifth Estate. There is a regular and ongoing requirement to co-ordinate the work of others.
You must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate and inspire others to make great content. You have an open mindset, a great work ethic and an understanding of story angles of interest to our younger target audiences on social media. You care about the people you work with and have a deep appreciation for different perspectives, opinions and experiences. Your work is governed by and adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available, but initiative and independent judgment are expected.
**Key Tasks**:
- Identifies CBC News, Marketplace and The Fifth Estate content to optimize and distribute on specific social platforms to target specific audiences.
- Generate ideas and produce content made for social channels, including writing, producing and vetting scripts for social and digital video, Instagram cuts, and Snapchat Discover segments.
- Identifies new digital storytelling formats and adapts pitches accordingly.
- Co-ordinates cross-platform UGC and engagement campaigns.
- Aids in the ongoing development of social distribution strategies, based on industry best practices and analysis of metrics.
- Amplifies appropriate content among various social pages and platforms.
- Trains stakeholders of differing skill levels on social media distribution and engagement; aids in the production and maintenance of training documents.
- Vets social posts (Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, etc.), ensuring best practices and journalistic standards apply.
- Identifies trending stories to appropriate units.- University degree or equivalent experience.-
- Five years’ experience, of which three must involve work in a major digital newsroom vetting content.-
- Proven experience of critical thinking, analysis and innovative storytelling.-
- Strong journalistic skills with an understanding of legal and ethical issues.-
- Knowledge of investigative journalism, responsible communication and accountability.-
- Experience producing and promoting video for various social channels such as Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok.-
- Knowledge of moderation strategies and tactics for encouraging meaningful conversations.-
- Basic video editing skills.-
- Extensive use and understanding of analytic tools.-
- Understanding of how algorithms affect the distribution of news and current affairs content and the best practices for optimization.-
- Well-versed in the strategies, tactics and tools required for authenticating social and user-generated content.-
- Experience using a CMS to package and publish digital news.-
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a high-pressure, tight-deadline environment.-
- Knowledge of CBC editorial policies, including mandates and CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.-
- Ability to work flexible hours as required, including evening shifts.-
