Position Overview:
Disability Management Consultants are part of a professional team that provides proactive services and support to employees during a health event. Liaise with employees and their leaders, union representatives, HR Business Partners, medical providers and other service providers (WCB, SunLife, etc.) to develop and implement disability management plans, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation while promoting an inclusive and supportive work environment.

Job Description:

- Active management of longer duration and/or complex occupational and non-occupational disability files including short and long term disability, workplace injuries, alcohol & drug related files, accommodation requests, non-occupational modified work requests, other types of medical leaves etc. from initiation to resolution, ensuring timely and effective communication with all stakeholders.
- Provide consultation and education on processes and relevant legislation (privacy, Duty to Accommodate related to disability, workers’ compensation, etc.)
- Develop and update procedures/policies/best practices as required. Identify the need for updates/changes and provide solutions
- Works on projects as required

Specific Skills:

- Develop and maintain credible working relationships with stakeholders: internally with employees, leaders, HR peers and in addition, work with external service providers while ensuring they are in compliance with service contracts
- File management - maintain accurate, confidential and secure files that comply with the required structure/components
- Ability to interpret medical reporting related to work restrictions and when necessary, create medical questionnaires to confirm fitness for work and identify work restrictions & limitations.
- Identify and confirm work-related functional limitations or restrictions and incorporate them into a return-to-work plan while working collaboratively with the employee and leader, union and HR as needed.
- Advanced communication skills including defining and communicating role expectations, interpersonal skills, negotiation skills, problem solving, and analytical skills. Excellent written and verbal skills are required.
- Coaching/training/education - ability to guide, share knowledge and mentor team members/HR peers/leaders. Knowledge of when to escalate an issue appropriately
- Conflict resolution - focus on interest-based outcomes, facilitating/participate in difficult discussions, identify roles and follow up actions
- Provide information to LR/Legal and/or create written responses on behalf of Finning for grievances, WCB claim appeals/requests for cost relief, information requests from outside parties (lawyers, insurance companies, Human Rights, etc.).
- Review, develop and continuously improve best practices, procedures and policies
- Project work

Knowledge:

- Comprehensive knowledge of disability management principles and best practices
- Understanding and promoting employee health through the implementation of early intervention initiatives and modified work opportunities
- Comprehensive knowledge of the Standard Operating Guidelines (Sunlife), STD plan administration documents, WCB legislation and procedures, specialized services with Inkblot
- Alcohol and Drug Policy knowledge, testing requirements, and expertise on managing disability files related to substance use including assessments and treatment, and collaboration with HRBP and leaders on developing and implementing return to work plans.
- Understands the leave and disability processes and the role of outside service providers, including the WCB
- Understand the roles and responsibilities of Human Resources, Environment, Health & Safety, line management and the employee. Collaborates and shifts tasks when appropriate
- Understands and adheres to relevant Finning policies and procedures

Education & Experience:

- Post-secondary education in a relevant field
- Minimum of 7 years of broad disability management experience
- Professional designation and/or industry specific training
- Experience in a unionized environment
- A combination of the above
