**Duration**: 4 or 8 months full-time internship with a potential for renewal; starting January 2024

**About us**:
At Liven, we are creating the next generation of functional protein and peptide ingredients to transform food and nutrition towards a healthier and more sustainable future.

We are a small, passionate team of scientists and entrepreneurs dedicated to working towards a positive impact and better future. We currently operate our lab from SpinUp, University of Toronto’s first wet lab incubator, which gives us access to a thriving like-minded community and brand new facilities.

**About the role**:
The research intern will work closely with senior scientists in executing experiments to optimize microbial production of Liven’s novel protein ingredients. This position offers an opportunity for a self-motivated, diligent and detail-oriented student to make a real world impact by bringing novel and sustainable protein ingredients to market.

**Key responsibilities**:

- conduct microbial growth using plates and shake flasks;
- molecular biology experiments such as cloning;
- protein expression, purification and protein analysis such as SDS-PAGE and protein quantification assays;
- developing standard operating protocols for the workflow;
- documentation and record-keeping;
- data summarization and reporting.

**An ideal intern will**:

- be working towards an Undergraduate/Master’s degree in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, bioengineering, life sciences, chemical engineering or similar;
- have prior hands-on laboratory experience including some training in microbiology, biochemistry and basic molecular biology techniques;
- be organized, detail-oriented and observant
- be able to record, analyse and present experimental data clearly and precisely;
- thrive in a small team and start-up environment;
- be a proactive self-starter.

**Direct reports**:The intern will report directly to the Lead Protein Scientist.

Pay: $17.20-$18.00 per hour
