New employees must provide documentation/proof of full COVID-19 vaccination status, a 2-step TB screening, as well as proof of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) prior to their start date at St. Mary’s General Hospital. Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.

**Position Summary**:
The Engineering Department ensures that the hospital’s equipment, spaces, structures, and infrastructure continue to support the hospitals mission of providing the highest possible quality care and experience for patients and their families. Under the direction of the Engineering Manager, the Carpenter completes service request work orders through CMMS, preventive maintenance, testing inspections, and demand maintenance in a way that manages the process of failure/wear of equipment and infrastructure to meet the requirements of all hospital staff, patients, and their families. The Carpenter works under general supervision but is expected to exercise independent judgement within the limitations of knowledge and experience and carries out all duties in accordance with SMGH mission, vision, values, and policies The three main risks that the above tasks are designed to prevent are threats to safety, threats to operations, and threats to the financial health of the hospital.

**Position Requirements**:

- Grade 12 Education or equivalent
- **Must possess Carpenter Certificate of Qualification**
- **A Painter and Decorator - Industrial Provincial Trade License**
- **Completed training for Infection Control During Construction**
- **Must have excellent attendance record**
- **Experience in a technically based service position**
- **Experience writing clear concise service documents on computer**
- **Experience inspecting exterior grounds, cleaning up, and maintaining ground facilities**
- **Knowledgeable about building and fire codes, the Ontario Health & Safety Act, WHMIS, and other related acts, and codes**

**Skills and Abilities**:

- **Demonstrated ability to select, maintain and use proper hand / power tools and materials for the assigned task, this includes personal protective equipment (PPE)**
- **Knowledgeable about safety procedures for operation of lifting devices and material handling equipment**
- **Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written**
- **Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians**
- **Demonstrated organizational and time management skills**
- **Demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills**
- **Intermediate computer skills**
- **Physically able to perform the activities associated with the position**
- **Availability for working weekends**
- **Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a self-directed manner as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment**
- **Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with SMGH staff, patients, families, and physicians**

**Position Responsibilities**:

- **Construct IPAC hoarding and barriers.**
- **Constructs, repairs, and maintains wooden structures such as furniture, equipment, partitions.**
- **Installs and repairs ergonomic devices, white boards, dispensers, shelving, ceiling tiles, and other items mounted to hospital infrastructure.**
- **Responds to applicable hospital emergency codes.**
- **Assists skill trades with Plumbing, HVAC, Millwrighting, Electrical, and Mechanic work as required.**
- **Work rotating shifts - days, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays included.**
- **Other duties as assigned**
