Reporting to the Human Resources Director, the role of the Health and Safety Specialist will be responsible for ensuring that COR required documentation is completed by site teams, conducting internal audits and inspections, monthly meetings, health and safety statistics and providing training on health & safety policies and procedures. This role will be a high-visibility role and will visit Company project sites four days per week with one day per week working from home or in the office.

**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**:

- Maintain records of incidents and accidents and provide statistics for management.
- Communicate information to employees regarding health and safety policies and procedures regarding lowering risks and accidents.
- Coordinate, facilitate and participate in weekly safety talks, monthly meetings, and audits
- Processing and finalizing reports to be completed in a timely matter
- Implement and maintain company health and safety policies, procedures and programs actively promoting safety culture.
- Provide leadership, guidance and technical support to all company operations regarding specific issues relating to health and safety programs and practices.
- Assist with the preparation and implementation of the site safety plan, and other safety related plans (Fall Protection Plans, Emergency Response, and Hazard Assessments).
- Work with project management to ensure site implementation of the safety program.
- Ensure that sub-contractors adhere to required safety standards as per policy and procedures.
- Support Human Resources with WSIB claims through modified work programs and report related injuries, as required.
- Assess risks and trends in the workplace and implement corrective measures to reduce risks.
- Conduct behaviour-based safety programs and related statistical data to identify industry trends.
- Ensure that site teams are completing required documentation to maintain the Company’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) status.
- Initiate follow up and corrective action to ensure compliance and maintain effective communication with workers and employer.
- Provide in-house health and safety training with employees which includes employee orientation, various employee specific training and Working at Heights.
- Notify site supervision of all safety hazards observed and provide input on corrective actions.
- Identify, investigate, report and provide guidance relative to root causes for incidents, employee safety programs and regulatory compliance pertaining to health and safety.
- Verifies that equipment and tool inspections are being conducted and documented as per requirements.
- Notifies appropriate stakeholders of any incident and supporting the investigation.
- Monitor compliance with Ontario Ministry of Labour safety requirements.
- Maintain a good working relationship with project teams, subcontractors, clients and suppliers.
- Organize internal and external training programs including but not limited to: Fall Protection, Personal Protection Equipment, CPR/First Aid.
- All other duties as assigned

**ROLE REQUIREMENTS / ABILITIES**

**Experience / Education**
- Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in health and safety, or equivalent education and experience in the Construction Industry
- 3-5 years’ experience in the safety field
- Knowledge of COR program and COR Internal Auditor is required.
- Excellent working knowledge of OHSA, other Acts and related Federal, Provincial and local regulations, standards, legislation that govern Health and Safety compliance.

**Skills & Abilities**
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills
- Valid Driver’s License with your own vehicle as the position requires visiting job sites throughout Ontario, specifically in GTA, Niagara, and Kitchener/Waterloo regions
- Strong computer proficiency
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, communication, and presentation skills
- Detail orientated individual
- Able to work independently with mínimal supervision
- Able to work well under pressure and meet set deadlines
- Ability to develop and maintain effective stakeholder relationships
- Effective problem-solving skills
- Ability to learn construction processes and terminology
