**Job Summary**

The Health, Safety and Wellness Specialist will be responsible for taking a proactive, prevention-oriented, and continuous improvement approach to develop, implement, and monitor health, safety, and wellness programs at Mohawk College and be a true agent of change. This includes being an internal technical resource to provide guidance, education and training on a variety of health, safety and wellness issues and conducting internal HS&W audits and employee surveys. The incumbent will provide a key focus implementation of programs and tools to meet legislative health and safety compliance. The incumbent provides H&S expertise to ensure that safe work conditions are maintained at all campuses and that these conditions meet H&S legislative compliance.

**What you’ll be doing**:
**Health and Safety Administration and Compliance**
- **Managing, developing and revising health and safety programs, operating procedures based on assessment of current needs, health and safety legislation, industry standards and best practices.
- Developing best practice guidelines and providing advice and consulting support to Leaders and employees on HS&W related matters.
- Support and assist Director of HS&W in developing HS&W plans, forecasting budgetary requirements and ongoing monitoring and management of the budget.
- Develop and update Health and Safety policies, programs and standard operating procedures for Mohawk College.
- Main resource for the Joint Health and Safety Committees. Provides legislation interpretation and expert advice to the Committee.
- Collaborates with the HS&W Assistant to manage committee member training, arranging workplace inspections schedules and follow-up on committee action items.
- Responds to and investigates health, safety and wellness related issues or concerns from employees including but not limited to work refusals, critical or serious injuries or hazardous situations and recommending solutions.
- Researches best practices and new legislative changes related to health, safety and wellness.
- Supports the promotion and communication of HS&W services, announcements and resources.
- Developing and delivering Occupational Health and Safety training programs including supporting documentation.
- Develop and maintain HS&W orientation program ensuring the program meets/exceeds legislative compliance.
- Manages the contractor management pre-qualification program (Safe Contractor) to ensure it meets health and safety compliance and Mohawk College’s health and safety standards.
- Regularly complete compliance/industry leading health and safety audits and develop action plans to close any gaps or corrective actions.
- Develops, implements, and coordinates special programs including Machine guarding, PPE, Lockout/Tagout Hearing Conservation and Occupational Hygiene Air Testing.
- Ensure the validity of data in the health and safety management system (eCompliance).
- Ensure Safety Data Sheet (SDS) database is up to date and provide direction to the HS&W Assistant to update database as necessary
- Implement policies, standard operating procedures and protocols.
- Implements and maintains ISO 45001 standard.
- Support H&S communication and awareness activities.

**Reporting, Metrics and Accident Investigations**
- **Partnering with internal/external partners for incident investigations and ensuring accurate root cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Ensure the tracking of incidents reported by employees, students and visitors. Manages/oversees accident/incident database to monitor trends and create reporting.
- Usage statistics on a quarterly basis to identify emerging issues/concerns for the purpose of implementing proactive support mechanisms and recommendations.
- Create quarterly and annual reports outlining various leading and lagging indicators and metrics to be included on overall HS&W executive summary.

**Wellness**
- **Support implementation of Wellness initiatives and projects.
- Support the employee ergonomic program including maintaining a standard assessment process, training, education and developing and updating ergonomic toolkits and complete ergonomic assessments as needed.
