**The Role**-
**Duties/Responsibilities**
- Maintains and monitors computer controlled signals via central computer system and communications equipment. Identifies and troubleshoots traffic signal control and communications equipment. Creates work order requests for repairs to be performed by traffic operations staff.
- Receives traffic signal operation inquiries, concerns, and complaints from staff and the public. Performs engineering analyses; assesses signal operation and control strategy; recommends/ implements corrective actions; and evaluates revisions. Prepares technical reports and correspondence.
- Monitors real-time traffic data and initiates signalized intersection and corridor reviews. Analyses and interprets capacity and optimization results. Calibrates and develops simulation/animation models. Prepares signal timing plans and programming details for traffic signal controllers.
- Provides technical guidance and coordinates the implementation of signal timing plans and configuration, equipment installation/replacement, and signalized intersection design with other staff (e.g., signal technicians, traffic engineering, project managers), contractors, consultants, and utilities staff.
- Assesses traffic control measures for emergency road closures and construction detours.
- Prepares/reviews signal equipment designs, layouts, and geometric requirements for capital projects. Works with design and construction staff, contractors, and consultants to support project implementation.
- Designs educational and interactive displays and brochures for education campaigns. Conducts presentations on traffic control systems and operations, including in-field training sessions with the public, school crossing guards/school patrols, and special needs groups.
- Maintains records and archives of traffic signal and timing information. Prepares information used as evidence in Court and video recordings as part of freedom of information requests.
- Maintains program information (e.g., signal equipment, work orders, equipment failures, traffic control strategies, field studies).
- Provides technical services as it relates to signal/traffic control strategies to engineering and project planning teams, area municipalities, and consultants. Performs technical reviews of traffic impact studies for development proposals and provides comments and as part of transportation capital programs, including preliminary design report recommendations.
- Makes recommendations to management to improve road network operations.
- Exchanges information with traffic engineering staff regarding construction detours, traffic volume count data, and collision reports.
- Provides traffic signal information to internal and external stakeholders as required (e.g., transit, legal, police, contractors, consultants, other levels of government staff, school boards, Ministry). Exchanges information with other municipalities.
- Maintains the security of software, technical/reference documentation, manuals, and transportation management systems. Contacts vendors regarding traffic control software/hardware requirements and system maintenance. Works with ITS to implement and maintain networking systems.

**Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities**
- Knowledge and skill acquired through a 3-year degree or diploma in transportation engineering, plus 3 years of related experience.
