Research Assistant, Instructional Language and Science Teaching and Learning

Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

**Position Overview**:
This research study focuses on inquiring teachers’ perspectives about the impact of instructional language on science teaching and learning. Participation in this project will promote development of research skills related with literature search, writing literature review, data collection and analysis. The position will mostly include virtual work with some in-person meetings if needed.

**Duties**:
The student research assistant will assist the researcher in writing a literature review based on instructional language use in science teaching and its impact on teachers’ science teaching, and in data collection, transcription and in analysis of data for this project. They will also assist in developing a reference database by using a reference management system, and other research related work that may include web-based search of various school and school divisions’ websites. The student would be required to complete the TCPS Core 2 ethics course and maintain confidentiality throughout the research process and even after completion of this research assistantship position. The responsibilities for this position will include:

- Performing literature search and prepare annotated bibliography and literature reviews.
- Assist with preparation of research materials and web-based search.
- Assist in data collection, data entry, transcription, and analysis.
- Assist in data management and record keeping.
- Perform other research related duties as assigned and maintain confidentiality.
- a general understanding of impact of instructional language used on teaching and learning, and experience of reading and analyzing academic literature.
- knowledge of using library database, Microsoft Word and Excel, Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
- familiarity with Manitoba science curricula and prior experience of writing a literature review, use of reference management system and dealing with confidential material is an asset.
- excellent time management and organization skills and ability to work independently and in collaboration with research team.

**Qualifications**:

- A current undergraduate student within the Bachelor of Education program with a good academic standing, the student should have general understanding and experience of teaching and learning in linguistically diverse classrooms, and in reading and analyzing academic literature.
- Prior experience of writing a literature review, use of reference management system, and dealing with confidential material is an asset.
- Experience of using library database and using reference management systems.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Knowledge of using Microsoft Team and Zoom.
- Have stable internet connection and a digital device to participate in virtual meetings.
- Students in 4th or 5th year of Integrated BEd Program or in 2nd year of After-degree BEd program who have completed relevant experiences in education and practice teaching experience in linguistically diverse classrooms would be given preference.

**Condition(s) of Employment**:

- **Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.**

The period of work will be from **January 12, 2026 - June 30, 2026**and the estimated total hours of work will be **25-50 hours**.
