**The Unit**

The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (The Centre) is a faculty development unit that works in collaboration with faculty and graduate students to provide leadership, expertise, and support in fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the University of Manitoba (UM). The Centre contributes to the practice and scholarship of teaching through guidance, collaborative problem-solving, and research with respect to teaching and learning effectiveness, curriculum planning, and institutional policies and infrastructure to optimize the learning and teaching experiences of students and faculty.

**The Position**

The Research Lead - Science of Teaching and Learning manages Science of Teaching and Learning, Teaching and Learning Research, and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning activities as they relate to fulfilling The Centre’s mandate to support, promote, and celebrate excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. Through the Centre, the Research Lead - Science of Teaching and Learning will play a critical role in supporting the development and implementation of evidence-based teaching and learning strategies within the UM and managing the Research, Curriculum Renewal & Program Evaluation, and Quality Assurance Portfolios within The Centre.

**Position Duties**:
**Lead - Science of Teaching and Learning - 50%**

In this description, research is related to the scholarship of teaching and learning and the science of teaching and learning as well as other applied research and evaluation related to teaching and learning.

**Day-to-day activities Include (but are not limited to)**:

- Conceptualize, develop, lead, and evaluate University-wide research projects related to the portfolio of the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning).
- Conceptualize and lead The Centre’s science of teaching and learning and teaching and learning research portfolio and maintain a productive research agenda aligned with The Centre mandate and UM Strategic Plan.
- Lead The Centre team responsible for conducting curriculum renewal and program evaluation, and quality assurance within the research and evaluation portfolio.
- Conceptualize, lead, develop, and report on all quality assurance processes related to The Centre’s programs and initiatives.
- Conceptualize, lead, and engage in knowledge mobilization to distribute findings from the sciences of teaching and learning, teaching and learning research, evaluation, and quality assurance activities to various audiences (e.g., peer-reviewed journals, relevant conference presentations, reports, and educational materials) within The Centre, the UM, and externally (provincially, nationally, and internationally).
- Review projects and related activities to ensure alignment with The Centre mandate and University of Manitoba Strategic plan.
- Establish tactics and priorities for The Centre’s research and evaluation projects, distribute resources to projects (e.g., personnel, budget), and implement plans for successful project completion.
- Promote and represent The Centre in coalitions, meetings, conferences and communicate with various internal (UM) and external stakeholders.
- Represent The Centre and act as a consultant to UM-wide Committees on advanced and emerging issues related to academic integrity, science of teaching and learning, student reflections of instruction, etc.
- Advance science of teaching and learning, teaching and learning research, and the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) across UM by building capacity among faculty/instructors to engage in these types of research.
- Build a teaching and learning research community/network within UM.
- Participate in The Centre’s strategic plan development and ensure goals related to research, evaluation, and quality assurance are realized.

**Management (Project and Personnel) - 40%**
- Manage all research and evaluation projects that are UM-wide related to the portfolio of the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning).
- Manage all The Centre’s teaching and learning research and evaluation projects from beginning to completion.
- Gather evidence and generate technical and research reports with an aim to enhance teaching and learning practices, policies, and initiatives within UM and higher education.
- Manage and coordinate the activities of the Science of Teaching and Learning Team to accomplish and meet research and evaluation project milestones.
- Report on the performance of the Science of Teaching and Learning team during all phases of research and evaluation projects.
- Manage the budgets, processes, personnel, and resources for Centre research and evaluation initiatives.
