Research Officer, Pre Award

Reporting to the Manager, Research Services, the Research Officer, Pre-Award works with members of the Research and Graduate Studies Portfolio to provide support and services to NOSM researchers, and liaises with other stakeholders to ensure proper coordination of research support.
This position is covered by the Terms and Conditions of the OPSEU Unit 677 Collective Agreement (Unit 2). A copy is available on the NOSM University website.
**Responsibilities**:
Tasks include but are not limited to the following:
- Acts as the point of contact for NOSM University researchers, partner Universities and external agencies, including liaising with other research organizations, funding agencies and regulating bodies, where appropriate, and in support of pre-award research activities. This includes pre-award training and orientation for researchers or other staff.
- Assists faculty in entering grants and awards into the ROMEO research database and maintains the pre-award sections of ROMEO.
- Gathers and analyzes data, compiles information and drafts various reports in support of research.
- Pre-reviews proposals for Research Ethics Boards and maintains a record of research projects pre-reviewed and approved.
- Provides consultative support to researchers to facilitate their research activities, including guidance relating to NOSM (or other) University procedures and policies.
- Updates information on the research office’s website, including but not limited to new grant and award opportunities, and maintains the relevant Pre-Award sections of the Research Office website and develops new items as necessary.
- Regularly contributes to the Research newsletter, which includes but is not limited to new grant and award opportunities, upcoming webinars or seminars, and relevant research news or updates.
- Assists with or conducts presentations on NOSM University research policies and procedures, such as grant administration and submission processes.
- Assists the Research Services Administrative Coordinator with the coordination of conferences and Research Services Office (RSO) hosted events where necessary.
- Participates in the development and updating of policies and procedures in conjunction with key stakeholders.
- Contributes to the development of strategic or operational plans, as well as ensuring successful completion of assigned initiatives.
- Fosters research throughout NOSM University by liaising with internal research partners, other Universities, and other external partners.
- Participates on various committees, as designated, on behalf of the Research Services Office.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**:
**Education**:
- A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline (health, social sciences) from a recognized university with Canadian accreditation or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**:
- Minimum of three (3) years of related experience in an academic research setting is required.
- Specialized knowledge of ethics (Tri Council Policy Statement TCPS 2) and harmonization between multijurisdictional research ethics review boards
- Demonstrate familiarity with granting councils (Federal, Provincial, and non-profit organizations), as well as other academic and industrial research funding
- Understanding of the research process in an academic environment
- Experience working with computer systems and software such as Microsoft, Internet, E-mail, Sharepoint, website editors and research specific programs such as ROMEO
- Experience in coordinating various tasks under tight deadlines
- Ability to communicate effectively and clearly using a variety of media
- Work within the established organizational practices, protocols and policies
**Language**:
- Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)
- French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset
