Employee Health, Safety, and Wellness Supervisor

The Employee Health, Safety and Wellness (EHSW) Supervisor is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and evaluation of health, safety, and wellness programs at St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre Brantford. Reporting to the Manager of Human Resources, the Supervisor promotes a safe and healthy work environment for all staff, physicians, volunteers, and students by embedding best practices into organizational culture and operations.
This role ensures compliance with all relevant legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and the Ontario Human Rights Code. The Supervisor monitors health and safety performance, provides guidance to the leadership team, and ensures policies and procedures are current and effective.
The EHSW Supervisor also leads disability and ability management processes, facilitating early and safe return-to-work plans and coordinating modified duties in collaboration with healthcare providers, insurers, union representatives, and internal teams. The position supports day-to-day Occupational Health and Safety functions, ensuring all activities align with legislation, collective agreements, and internal policies. Through continuous improvement efforts, the Supervisor plays a vital role in advancing the well-being and safety of the organization’s workforce in collaboration with leaders.
**Key Accountabilities**:
**Program Leadership & Compliance**
- Oversee the daily operations of the Employee Health, Safety and Wellness (EHSW) Program
- Champion a culture of health, safety, and wellness for all staff, physicians, students and volunteers
- Provide mentorship and coaching to leaders and team members on health, safety, and wellness best practices
- Monitor compliance with organizational policies and health and safety legislation
- Anticipate emerging risks and legislative changes to maintain compliance and program relevance
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of initiatives related to Health & Safety, WSIB, STD, LTD, and wellness
- Review, track, analyze and report on metrics to be able to respond to trends related to WSIB, Duty to Accommodate, Attendance Support Program, and occupational and non-occupational illness/injury
- Scan the environment for emerging challenges, risks and best practices to ensure optimal performance and compliance with changing guidelines, standards of care and legislation, including any related case law
- Identify opportunities for improvement and collaborate with leaders to implement changes that enhance the health, safety and wellness of our workforce
- Support leaders with workplace investigations and action planning as required
**Injury Management & Return to Work**
- Oversee and coordinate WSIB, STD, and LTD cases for injured or ill employees.
- Manage WSIB claims, appeals, reporting and cost-saving strategies
- Lead return-to-work and workplace accommodation programs in collaboration with managers and healthcare providers.
- Work with leaders to ensure timely reporting and documentation of workplace injuries, including completion of WSIB forms and employer incident reports.
- Facilitate modified work programs for both occupational and non-occupational injuries.
- Monitor lost time injuries and absenteeism, recommending strategies to reduce overall absences.
**Health & Safety Committees & Engagement**
- Co-chair the Joint Health and Safety Committee and foster an Internal Responsibility System
- Collaborate with the committee and leadership to reduce workplace injuries and hazards to promote a safe environment
- Participate in emergency preparedness and violence prevention committees, investigations, and planning. and/ other committees as required
- Liaise with the Ministry of Labour and other external bodies on workplace health and safety matters
**Risk Identification & Prevention**
- In collaboration with the JHSC & Leaders lead the identification and implement preventative measures to reduce physical, biological, chemical, ergonomic, and psychological risks
- In collaboration with the JHSC & Leaders lead the identification conduct safety audits and risk assessments; recommend corrective actions and follow-up
- Analyze and report on trends in WSIB claims, absenteeism, and other key metrics
- Monitor and report on communicable disease prevention in alignment with OMA, OHA, and Ministry guidelines in collaboration with the Manager of Infection Prevention and Control
- Ensure all Incident Reports are completed thoroughly and logged within a timely fashion
**Training & Education**
- Lead the development and delivery of health and safety training and education for all employees and collaborate with the Manager of Quality, Innovation and Learning where necessary
- Support the implementation of regulated safety programs (e.g., WHMIS, Respiratory Protection, Sharps Prevention, Confined Spaces)
