Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada (Hybrid)
The Systems Design Engineer will perform system operation activities to deliver a high quality and safe guideway design, on time, at the lowest cost. The incumbent will work within a team context to design a system that satisfies the overall system requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Systems Design Manager or Project System Specialist, the incumbent is accountable for performing the work correctly, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages. The System Design Specialist typically works with a team of engineers to define what will be designed, how it will perform and how it will be determined that it is working correctly.- Perform system analysis, modeling and simulation to specify the system performance, and verify the train control systems- Assist in analyzing train characteristics and safety requirements to define the safe braking model- Assist in analyzing guideway to define requirements for headway (passenger waiting time), safe train separation, interlocking requirements, new guideway elements and guideway designs to resolve operational conflicts-
- Ensure the guideway design is implemented in accordance with applicable standards and signaling principles- Interface and build working relationships with software and test groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issue- Development, implementation and maintenance of relevant tools whether procured or internally developed- Assist marketing in the preparation simulations to support technical proposals- Accurately report work progress and estimate to complete against work assigned- Promote a safety culture where product safety is paramount- Ensure that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety related defects
Required Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering or equivalent- Excellent planning and organizational skills and ability to self-direct- Fluent English communication skills, both written and oral- Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)- Experience with specification driven hardware and software systems design and associated tools- Experience with software, modern software development methodology methods, processes and tools
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Experience with generic railway signaling techniques, Automatic Train Control system specifications, and military and industry-based standards and regulatory norms- Experience with requirements management tool, such as Rational DOORS or equivalent
