This position contributes to adult newcomers’ successful integration to Canada by fostering their English language skill development in a client-centered, real-world task-based classroom learning environment. This position respects the diversity of clients’ backgrounds, learning styles, and needs to plan effective modules and activities which motivate learners to learn, practice and demonstrate their English language competencies in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. The LINC Teacher uses proactive communication skills and classroom management strategies to maintain a client-centered environment which is respectful of the diversity of staff and clients and ensures funder contractual obligations are met or exceeded in the context of CFN’s vision and workplace values. This role collaborates closely with other teachers and reports to the Associate Director. The contract is set to end on September 26, 2025, with the possibility of extension based on funding availability and a performance evaluation.
**Key Result Areas and Responsibilities**:
- Classroom_
- Accurately assess the needs, goals, and progress of individual learners using activities and techniques appropriate to the learner’s English level
- Use the Canadian Language Benchmarks (2012) and Portfolio Based Language Assessment processes to plan level-appropriate modules and daily lessons based on client identified themes
- Facilitate meaningful and engaging activities for learners to learn, practice and demonstrate the four competencies in each of the skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
- Use authentic and level
- appropriate materials, special guest speakers, field trips and technology to enrich the learning experience
- Provide level-appropriate informal and formal feedback to learners on their language strengths, weaknesses, and progress
- Independently use appropriate conflict-resolution and communication strategies to manage learner expectations or concerns regarding and not limited to teaching styles and materials, language progress, assessment results, and attendance
- **Administrative**_
- Accurately maintain records of students’ attendance, basic personal information, current Canadian Language Benchmarks, number of tasks, and progress as requested on CHAD
- Accurately maintain digital and/or written records of classroom modules, lessons, and activities as requested
- Respect and follow policies and guidelines regarding the Centre’s resources, equipment, and classrooms
- Pro-actively participate and problem solve with colleagues and program administration staff during scheduled meetings
- **Key Result Areas**:_
- 80% learner satisfaction (results of mid session visits and outcomes of learner-instructor conflicts that involve LINC Administrative staff)
- At least 8-10 assessment tasks per skill, reflective of PBLA criteria per approximate 300-hour instructional cycle or as determined by the Director
**Qualifications**
**Service Orientation**: Cultural sensitivity and experience related to teaching adults in an English as an Additional Language classroom context; Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence
**Education**: A degree in Teaching English as a Second/Additional Language, Linguistics, Education, or a related field. Completion of Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and Portfolio-Based Language Assessment (PBLA) is required. Specific courses or professional development related to teaching EAL and EAL methodology and completion of ESL for ALL (Adult Literacy Learners) training are considered an asset.
**Experience**:A minimum of 300 hours of experience implementing PBLA in a LINC class is required.
**Technical**: Full computer literacy skills; demonstrating proficiency in Microsoft Office program; proven ability to introduce adult students of various English levels to technology as a learning resource and deliver online lessons efficiently, preferably on Avenue.
**Teamwork**: Pro-actively participates in team activities sharing ideas, concerns and solutions
**Communication**: Strong communication skills; effectively listens to and responds to students’ and colleagues’ needs; communicates clearly and consistently orally and in writing to meet expressed needs. Proven ability to effectively work with others when positive change is required; outreach participation may be requested.
**Working conditions**
Class schedule: Mondays to Fridays, 9:00am-12:00 pm
Session dates: May 26 to September 26, 2025
Class level range: Literacy to CLB4
Delivery Model: Hybrid (both in person M-Th and online Fridays)
Preparation and schedule meetings outside the class time are required as per the agreement with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Paid or voluntary participation in additional projects such as classroom-based research, conferences or agency initiatives may be required at times.
