**Job Purpose**
The LINC Instructor of Community-Based (CB) LINC Class for Seniors is responsible for developing and maintaining effective resources used by the LINC instructional team. This role uses productive communication skills to maintain a client-centered environment that is respectful of the diversity of staff and clients, encourages the successful integration of newcomers to Canada, and ensures funder contractual obligations are met or exceeded in the context of the Centre’s vision and workplace values. This role reports to the Coordinator of Language Programs. Key Result Areas and Responsibilities
**Classroom**
- Accurately assesses senior learners' needs, goals, and progress using activities and techniques appropriate to the learner’s English level.Uses the Canadian Language Benchmarks (2012) and Portfolio Based Language Assessment processes to plan level-appropriate modules and daily lessons based on client-identified themes.Facilitates meaningful and engaging activities for senior learners to learn, practice, and demonstrate the four competencies in each of the skills: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.Enriches the learning experience with authentic and level-appropriate materials, special guest speakers, field trips, and technology.Provides level-appropriate informal and formal feedback to senior learners on their language strengths, weaknesses, and progress.Plans field trips and schedules guest speakers for the senior students.Collaborates with other instructors, the PBLA Leads, and Daytime Coordinator to develop customized modules and curriculum for the CB LINC Program for Seniors.Independently uses appropriate conflict-resolution and communication strategies to manage learner’s expectations or concerns regarding and not limited to teaching styles and materials, language progress, assessment results, and attendance.
AdministrativeAccurately maintains records of students’ attendance, basic personal information, current Canadian Language Benchmarks, number of tasks, and progress as requested on CHAD.Accurately maintains digital and/or written records of classroom modules, lessons, and activities as requested.Respects and follow policies and guidelines regarding the Centre for Newcomers’ and community centres’ resources, materials, equipment, and classrooms.Proactively participates and collaborates in problem-solving with colleagues and program administration staff during scheduled meetings.
Key Result Areas:
80% learner satisfaction (results of midsession visits and outcomes of learner-instructor conflicts that involve LINC Administrative staff)At least 8-10 assessment tasks per skill, reflective of PBLA criteria per approximate 400-hour instructional cycle or as determined by the Director.
**Qualifications**:
Service Orientation: Cultural sensitivity and experience related to teaching adults in an English as an Additional Language classroom context; Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
Education: Degree in Teaching English as a Second/Additional Language, Linguistics, Education, or a related field; specific courses or professional development related to teaching EAL and EAL methodology, Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), and Portfolio Based Language Assessment (PBLA).
Technical: Full computer literacy skills; demonstrated proficiency in the Microsoft Office program; proven ability to introduce adult students to technology as a learning resource; familiarity with teaching resources.
Teamwork: Proactively collaborates with colleagues to share ideas, concerns, and solutions; proven ability to effectively work with others when positive change is required.
Communication: Fluency in Arabic, as frequently used by senior students; effectively listens to senior students’ and colleagues’ needs; communicates clearly and consistently orally and in writing to address expressed needs; communicates clearly orally and in writing to meet expressed needs; pro-actively collaborates with colleagues to share ideas, concerns and solutions; proven ability to effectively work with others when positive change is required. Working ConditionsTravel to the community centre for activity delivery; a Class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle are preferred.Preparation and scheduling of meetings outside of class time are required as part of the agreement with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).Participation in additional projects, such as classroom-based research, conferences, or agency initiatives, may be required on a paid or voluntary basis.
