The Carpenter works under the general supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor and is responsible for the fabrication, repair and maintenance of Transit building equipment, facilities and fitments and the incorporation of approved modifications to the equipment, facilities and fitments.
**As the **_Carpenter_**_ _**you will**:
- Builds, installs and maintains entire structures and individual structural elements such as walls, windows, doors, roofs, floors, interior trimwork, etc.
- Builds, installs and maintains furniture, cabinets, storage units and fixtures.
- Maintains, repairs and installs locks and components.
- Builds, installs and maintains on-street Transit facilities such as passenger shelters, comfort stations and street furniture.
- Prepares cost estimates for construction, maintenance, replacement, and installation projects.
- Keeps current with new construction and maintenance techniques, materials, equipment, standards and codes.
- Records established maintenance data.
- Directs the work of several helpers to accomplish projects and assists in their training.
- Assists with the coordination of work performed by contractors.
- Performs inventory checks of tools, equipment and materials.
- Performs other related duties consistent with the classification.
**Your education and qualifications include**:
- High School or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Certified Interprovincial Journeyman Carpenter
- Minimum of five years’ experience as a Journeyman Carpenter.
- Ability to read and work from blue prints, assembly and layout drawings.
- Ability to prepare detailed work plans and cost estimates for construction, maintenance, and installation projects.
- Working knowledge of building code requirements and current construction practises.
- Must have acceptable safety and job performance relevant to this position.
- Ability to operate hand tools and shop equipment required to perform the work involved.
- Ability to work with mínimal supervision.
- Ability to adhere to the requirement of Respectful Workplace Policy
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, including the ability to communicate and express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to schedule tasks effectively and work quickly and efficiently on a number of concurrent projects in an environment of rapidly changing priorities.
- Ability to lead a small group of workers to successfully accomplish a task.
**Conditions of employment**:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must possess and maintain in good standing a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Must possess a complete set of hand tools required to perform the work of the trade.
- Must be free of any physical restrictions that would prevent performing the manual labour components of work within the classification which includes working outdoors during both summer and winter weather conditions.
- Must be able to work in an environment involving exposure to dust, noise, outdoor weather conditions and diesel exhaust fumes.
- Must be willing to be trained on other equipment that may be used in the Transit department, within a timeframe determined by management.
- Must successfully complete required training in the use of specialized equipment, such as scissor lifts, fork lifts, etc. within a specified time frame and be willing to take upgrading courses as required.
