**Job Description**:
Reporting to the EHS Director - Americas, the Health and Safety Manager - Ontario monitors and evaluates the workplace to ensure compliance with Harsco rules and related provincial regulations. Serves as a staff specialist in safety and health by developing and carrying out procedures with the line organization that effectively control injury and illness exposures in the Company and ensure compliance with government statutes and regulations by performing the following duties. Based in Ontario, this position supports surrounding sites Hamilton, Nanticoke and Whitby.
- Leads a safe working environment and culture with improvement in key safety indicators.
- Implements and supports safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, provincial, and Harsco rules based on the American Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
- Assists line and staff management to understand provincial and OSHA regulations and standards, including guidance on handling OSHA compliance, inspections, and citations.
- Prepares studies and analyses of industrial safety incident causes and hazards to health for use by company personnel and outside agencies.
- Assist Workers’ Compensation Claim Manager with administration of workers' compensation program, including leading the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperates in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Complete monthly statistical performance reports on safety portal.
- Organize and Conduct OSHA 10/30 Hour Training courses as needed.
- Assist in developing and setting up the sites to conduct weekly tool box safety meetings
- Participate in New Hire Orientation
- Input and manage accidents and injuries, and monitor investigations through the EMEX database.
- Perform compliance audits at each site across assigned area of responsibility in Quebec.
- Interface with the customer’s safety managers and representatives.
- Prepare and present safety reports and statistics to senior management.
- Work with customers on their contractor management programs to ensure that Harsco is in compliance with their expectations.
**Qualifications**:
**Basic Qualifications**:
- Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in safety engineering, occupational safety or health, environmental science, industrial relations or related field.
- Minimum of three years' experience as a safety professional in heavy industry or manufacturing organization, including exposure to Health and Safety regulations and requirements, investigating workplace safety, incidents, and worker’s compensation claims.
- Willingness and ability to travel to plant sites in Ontario, and infrequent travel to Quebec and/or the United States
- Competent computer skills and use with MS Office, PowerPoint, Word and Excel
- Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
- Excellent organizational, administrative, and time-management skills.
- Self-motivated and able to remain productive with little supervision oversight.
- Must be able to communicate in English. French fluency would be an asset.
**Preferred Qualifications**:
- Professional certification, such as Certified Safety Professional.
- Heavy industry experience such as Steel Mill or Mining.
