**Industry Standards Officer - Job Posting**
The VSA builds public confidence in the motor dealer industry in BC by engaging and educating industry and consumers, ensuring a safe and reliable motor vehicle buying experience.
As an independent, non-profit, regulatory agency that oversees the sales of personal-use new and used vehicles, the VSA:
- licenses motor vehicle dealerships, salespeople, broker agents, broker agent representatives, and wholesalers
- provides licensing courses and continuing education for VSA licensees
- offers consumer information and assistance
- provides assistance with dispute resolution
- investigates consumer complaints and claims
- undertakes compliance action
**What is the Role?**
The Industry Standards Officer (ISO) has considerable interaction with all VSA licensees as well as Motor Dealer representatives, their solicitors, accountants, vendors, and former employees in some cases.
The ISO is expected to build and maintain relationships with various law enforcement representatives and liaises with the VSA’s Advertising Standards Officer, Consumer Services Officers, and Investigation Officers. This position collaborates with Licensing Officers to share information and ensure the team is up to date on current practices and trends.
The ISO is expected to be both proactive and reactive in the performance of all duties. Fieldwork comprises most of the ISO’s responsibilities.
Travel outside the lower mainland is required up to 25% or more in some periods.
**What You'll Do**:
- Connect with VSA licensees to conduct and complete inspections in a consistently fair and professional manner wherever needed within the province.
- Devise and implement appropriate inspection strategies to ensure efficient, cost-effective, professional, and fair inspections.
- Collect, analyze, and organize large amounts of complex and technical information and physical evidence into detailed, high-quality inspection reports.
- Prepare inspection reports in a professional, timely and fair manner
- Meet VSA Industry Standards service standards.
- Educate licensees about the VSA’s expectations and legislation applicable to the automotive industry, including their rights and best practices to comply with the legislation.
- Present inspection findings at hearings before the Registrar of Motor Dealers and, if necessary, to the courts.
- Report on compliance issues, industry trends, risks, and industry practices to the Manager of Industry Standards.
- Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Industry Standards.
**Is this a Good Fit for You?**
The ISO works as part of an integrated team building relationships with licensees and salespeople and conducting inspections to ensure consumer protection in motor vehicle transactions in the province. Using a high degree of initiative, professionalism, discretion and superior dispute resolution skills, the Industry Standards Officer educates and conducts formal compliance inspections of licensees.
As a front-line ambassador, the Industry Standards Officer conducts liaison visits, and inspections for compliance with the Motor Dealer Act and its regulations, and the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act and includes authority delegated under this legislation.
**Your Experience and Educational Background**
- A relevant diploma or certificate with a focus in business, public administration, criminology, or other related discipline
- Investigation & Enforcement Skills Certificate; or
- Several years’ experience conducting inspections, preferably in the compliance/enforcement environment; or
- Equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience preparing reports or regulatory documentation during inspections
- Experience dealing with a variety of contacts and individuals (e.g., business representatives, legal counsel, and members of the public) on complex, sensitive or contentious issues
- Experience and competency dealing with individuals who may be confused, angry or hostile
Preferred:
- University degree in law, criminology, legal studies, or a related discipline.
