**Basic Function**: Reporting to and receiving guidance and direction from the Supervisor of Nutrition Science, this position is responsible for implementing nutritional services and nutrition programs in the Zoo’s Nutrition Science Unit. This role will also contribute to the food production goals. May act as designate for the Supervisor during their absence. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

**Responsibilities**:

- Oversees the feed quality control program within Nutrition Science including sampling of feed/diets and sample submission and incorporation of data into records.
- Coordinates the daily operations of the browse program including harvesting & delivery schedules, maintenance of equipment and organizing volunteer events.
- Investigates and proposes the use of alternative feeds and programs based on sustainability, cost, and nutritional quality.
- Oversees the Nutrition Science training & enrichment, as well as activity program including carcass feeding, in conjunction with the Welfare Science Unit.
- Maintain and improve nutrition records, including diet sheets, labels and analytical data of diets.
- Perform literature searches in preparation for new projects or manuscript/grant submissions.
- Assists in execution of nutrition research projects including husbandry of research animals, weighing of animals/diets, collection of samples, and collation of data.
- Writes and edits material for internal and external reports, newsletters, articles, blogs and other public communications.
- Researches, prepares and delivers professional presentations on behalf of Nutrition Science Unit.
- Serves as a team leader providing training, support and guidance to staff, grant positions, and research students.
- Reports to the supervisor the absence of or any defect in any equipment or protective device that they are aware of and which may endanger themselves or another staff member.
- Reports to supervisor any contravention of the Ontario Health & Safety Act.
- Ensures all accidents and hazards are reported to supervisor immediately.
- Work in a safe manner at all times in compliance with Health & Safety, WHMIS and Toronto Zoo policies and procedures.
- Follows all branch instructions.
- Attends appropriate training courses as required
- May be required to carry a two-way radio.
- Fulfill all duties assigned to Nutrition Assistant Grade 4 as required, including the following:

- Gives guidance and direction to Nutrition Assistants Grade 1, 2, and 3 as well as other Zoo staff assigned to the Nutrition Science Centre.Assists with diet and diet supplement preparation.

Operates and maintains specialized food preparation equipment.
Receives, checks, unloads and stores food products which may involve large quantities of heavy foodstuffs.
Cleans and disinfects Nutrition Science Centre area and equipment, including food containers.
Makes periodical inventory checks, keeps daily inventory control and ordering of foodstuffs as required.
Assists in conducting guided tours of the Nutrition Science Centre.

**Qualifications**:

- Bachelor of Science degree in animal nutrition or animal sciences. Masters of Science in Animal Nutrition or Animal Sciences preferred OR equivalent training and work experience.
- Must have three (3) years experience in animal diet formulation and feed quality control techniques.
- Must possess working experience in research, animal welfare and ecological issues related to Nutrition Sciences.
- Possess advanced computer skills including knowledge of feed formulation, statistical software programs, MS office suite, and MS Outlook. Experience with Microsoft Access and ZIMS an asset.
- Demonstrated ability in hypothesis development and experimental design, including initiating research projects with mínimal supervision.
- Demonstrated experience in public speaking, training, and workshop facilitation.
- Demonstrated leadership and team building/coaching abilities.
- Possess above average organizational skills along with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Must be a team player and be able to collaborate regularly and enthusiastically with colleagues across departments and divisions.
