**Duties**:
The Director, Carbon Management Technologies and the Director, Industrial Optimization directs CanmetENERGY-Ottawa and Varennes' activities respectively in identifying, developing and implementing technologies that promote the sustainability of Canada’s energy and carbon intensive industries by enhancing energy efficiency and reducing their environmental footprints, especially pertaining to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These activities address government objectives of sustainable development as well as societal issues associated with energy security, economic development and climate change.

The Directors mobilize national and international partners, clients, and stakeholders to work together to find integrated, innovative solutions, and to leverage resources and accelerate technological developments for the needs and benefits of Canadian stakeholders.

Director, Carbon Management Technologies
- Directs the work of multi-disciplinary research teams targeting different aspects of GHG emission reductions from energy and carbon-intensive industries: five teams focus on advanced energy systems and technologies related to carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) together with CO2 transport; the sixth team focuses on technologies associated with reducing and quantifying methane emissions to the environment. The research teams are comprised of engineers, research scientists (from the physical and engineering sciences), and technologists. The Director sets priorities for innovation across these fields at the national level.
- Establishes unique R&D capabilities and an up to-date knowledge base within the federal government to serve the needs of Canadian stakeholders.

Director, Industrial Optimization
- Responsible for preparing business cases to capture the reasoning for initiating projects, defining long-term strategic plans for R&D programs and developing partnerships with universities, research centres, manufacturers, consultants and others aimed at developing technologies, methods and tools to optimize industrial processes to help achieve industrial decarbonisation.
- Directs the work of multi-disciplinary research teams targeting different aspects of GHG emission reductions from energy and carbon-intensive industries: advanced energy systems and technologies related to industrial decarbonization, bioenergy, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) together with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and tools to enhance energy management and drive technological improvement in the energy sector. The Director sets priorities for innovation across these fields at the national level.
- Materializes the impact of our work through the transfer of knowledge and technologies in the form of training, software, guides, data, models via and for our partners.

The Directors coordinate Canada's R&D efforts with national and international bodies to help Canada meet its commitment to address global climate change issues related to its carbon intensive industries.

The Directors interact with NRCan funding authorities to enable research, development and demonstration (RD&D) within the sector and other organizations’ laboratories. The Directors also expedite energy technology commercialization for domestic and export markets.
