Duties And Responsibilities Responsible for providing leadership and expertise for the University‑wide direction and operation of services to support research and technology partnerships, innovation and commercialization. The Director, IPS, is responsible for the development and delivery of an effective strategy, efficient services and business processes to facilitate new research partnerships with government, academia and industry. The Director, IPS, is an Institutional‑signing authority for contract‑based funding agreements, bid documents and proposals. The Director, IPS is the head of the technology transfer function, which, through the Manager Contracts and Intellectual Property, manages the intellectual property and technology transfer activities (patenting, licensing and commercializing University‑technologies) and related budgets including overall spend and revenue allocations. Qualifications Knowledge of management practices in people management, strategic planning and risk management, policy development, financial management and stakeholder relationship management Issues and trends at Carleton and in the higher education sector related to Industry partnership services Knowledge of the legislative and ethical frameworks governing Industry partnership services Proven ability to and experience in line management and leadership Excellent understanding of university research funding and programs and of the university structure in general Excellent understanding of intellectual property protection, portfolio management and commercialization Demonstrated success in research and technology proposal development for government and/or industry sponsors Demonstrated success in licensing and the creation and growth of new research or technology‑based ventures; including working with investors, founders and board members Experience in program management and/or managing contract research projects Experience in promoting research expertise, technology and innovation outcomes Demonstrated skill in managing, planning and implementing multiple projects, prioritizing and triaging work based upon sound decision‑making principles and organizational goals and producing high quality work under pressure while meeting strict deadlines Experience in interpreting, explaining and applying University policies and regulations Excellent listening, oral presentation and writing skills Highest level of ethics and integrity in professional matters; sensitivity for confidentiality and scrupulous commitment to the best interests of Carleton and its researchers Advanced knowledge of administration, accounting, communications and human resources principles normally acquired through postsecondary studies in a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and work experience Strong software application and social media skills, including Microsoft Office (including Word and Excel), SharePoint, e‑mail, website design and social media (blogging, Facebook, Twitter, Slack, etc.) as outreach tools Experience with client relationship management software, Carleton internal systems preferred Education And Experience Graduate degree in a relevant field Minimum of seven years of previous experience in progressive leadership roles Minimum five years of demonstrated experience in a Collaborative Research, Technology Commercialization and/or Business Development role in University, Hospital, Government or Economic Development agency HR Note Equivalencies will be considered.
