Machinist (Part-time) - Materials Testing

**Overview**
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Part-Time Machinist to join our team for the afternoon/evening shift. This role is ideal for skilled machinists seeking flexible part-time work, with a typical shift of 4 hours per day and a flexible start time. You will be responsible for machining and preparing test specimens, operating and maintaining machining equipment, and ensuring that all tasks are performed with precision and adherence to safety standards.
**Responsibilities**:
**Material Specimen Preparation**:
- Preparation of metal specimens for testing, including cutting, grinding, and machining, ensuring proper labeling, handling, and documentation throughout the testing process.
- Follow established procedures and safety guidelines to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Machine and prepare test specimens from various materials, including metals, in accordance with industry standards such as ASTM, ASME, AWS, CSA, DNV, LR, ABS, ISO and client specifications.
- Maintain an organized inventory of prepared specimens.
**Machining Operations**:
- Operate and maintain a range of machining equipment, including milling machines, grinders, and waterjet machines, ensuring all equipment is calibrated and functioning correctly.
**Precision Machining**:
- Perform precision machining tasks, including cutting, drilling, turning, and milling, with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
**Quality Control**:
- Inspect and measure machined components to ensure they meet specified tolerances and quality standards. Make adjustments as necessary to maintain high levels of accuracy.
**Equipment Maintenance**:
- Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on machining equipment, troubleshooting issues to minimize downtime and ensure efficient operations.
**Safety and Compliance**:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations within the laboratory.
- Participate in safety training and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and quality control procedures.
**Documentation and Reporting**:
- Record machining parameters, material specifications, and any deviations from standard procedures, ensuring all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
**Collaboration**:
- Work closely with technicians, engineers and other team members to ensure that machining tasks align with overall project requirements and deadlines.
**Continuous Improvement**:
- Assist in the development and implementation of new machining methods and procedures to enhance laboratory capabilities.
**Qualifications**:
- High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a formal apprenticeship or vocational training program in machining is preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a machinist, preferably in a laboratory or manufacturing environment, with a focus on working with metals.
- Proficiency in operating manual and automated machining equipment, with strong skills in reading and interpreting technical drawings and specifications.
- Exceptional precision and attention to detail in machining tasks, with a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to troubleshoot and resolve machining issues independently.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team and collaborate with technicians and engineers.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and positioning materials, standing for extended periods, and working with heavy machinery.
**Preferred Skills**:
- Experience in a materials testing laboratory or similar environment.
- Familiarity with metallurgical principles and testing standards (e.g., ASTM, ASME, AWS, CSA, DNV, LR, ABS, ISO).
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and programming waterjet machine.
**Physical Job Requirements**:
- Some heavy lifting of welded steel samples.
- Must be able to lift a 25 lb weight above your head freely and unassisted.
