**Job Title**: Coordinator: Canine Services
**Overall Purpose**: Under the direction of the Supervisor: Kennel, the Coordinator: Canine Services is responsible for assessing and placing, monitoring the emotional well being, and developing and coordinating enrichment programs for Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) dogs.
In accordance with OHS’ objectives, philosophies and policies and procedures, the Coordinator: Canine Services is responsible for the following:
- **Professional Responsibilities**:
- Provide consultation services for line and management staff as well as community partners and the general public
- Develop and deliver internal and external workshops and other training
- Assess the behaviour and temperament of shelter and other dogs
- Monitor the emotional well-being of OHS dogs
- Match appropriate placements for dogs in cooperation with adoption and foster staff
- Develop and implement enrichment plans for shelter dogs
- Recruit and maintain excellent relationships with OHS Partners in Placement and other OHS partners
- **Administrative Responsibilities**:
- Represent OHS in a professional manner
- Be thoroughly familiar with pertinent legislation, regulations, guidelines, OHS policies and good animal care practices
- Train, supervise and support student, volunteer and work placements
- Maintain a superior knowledge of animal temperament, behaviour and training
- Participate in supervision, evaluation and training sessions
- Maintain OHS facilities and equipment
- Prepare accurate expense accounts and other forms
- Produce written reports and records
- Maintain computerized records
- Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required
- Provide training and orientation to new staff and volunteers as required
- Be familiar and ensure compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures
- May be required to assume the responsibilities of supervisor
**3. Program Development**
- Research, develop and implement programs and strategies to assure the emotional health of OHS dogs
- Train staff and volunteers in canine enrichment
- Participate in appropriate OHS committees
- Contribute to ongoing evaluation of program objectives
- Participate in the identification and achievement of OHS objectives
- Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of social, environmental and cultural issues relating to animal health and welfare
- May be required to participate in public relations and promotional activities
**Education and Experience**:
- A degree or diploma or significant relevant experience with animal behaviour and/or psychology
- 4 to 6 years experience in raising, training, showing, grooming and working with dogs
- Extensive reading or research in canine temperament and behaviour
- Clinical experience is an asset
- Adult teaching experience is an asset
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook add
- Demonstrated excellent customer service, crisis management and conflict resolution skills
- Demonstrated excellent teamwork abilities
- Demonstrated ability to relate well to people from a wide variety of backgrounds
**Languages**:
- Advanced verbal and written skills in English are required
- Bilingualism (English/French) is preferred
Essential duties and working conditions:
- Employees may be required to work evening, holiday and weekend shifts
- Employment is conditional upon the ability to provide services in a safe manner, including, but not limited to, lifts and transfers of large animals and interaction with potentially aggressive animals
- Employees will be required to wear a uniform designated by the employer
- Employment is conditional upon the ability to work around all species of animals safely
- Employment is conditional upon maintaining confidentiality of OHS information
**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
**Salary**: $23.78-$28.95 per hour
Schedule:
