Job Summary Campus Security Services is a department within the Vice President Finance and Operations portfolio that provides security, community safety, personal safety, at-risk prevention services, emergency planning, parking and motor pool services to the campus community at the University of Victoria. In providing these services, Campus Security Services contributes to creating a safe, secure and welcoming campus for all and to the overall mission of the University by providing exceptional customer service in all aspects of the operation. The critical nature of these services is provided 24/7/365. Campus Security serves a diverse client base including students, employees and visitors. The department’s 51 employees work together as a team to ensure a high standard of customer service delivery and effective, efficient and safe adherence to university policies. Together, we support UVic’s vision to be a university of choice for outstanding students, faculty, and staff from Canada and around the world and to enhance UVic’s reputation among the best universities in Canada and the world.  The University has a population that consists of approximately 5,660 faculty and staff as well as over 21,965 students with 3500 students who reside on campus, and over 150 buildings on 163 hectares and 20 parking lots containing over 4200 stalls. This position acts as the Assistant to the Campus Security Supervisor under the direction and supervision of the Campus Security Supervisor. Security Team Lead supports the Campus Security Supervisor in the creation of a proactive and holistic culture of safety on campus that aligns with the university's mission of offering a welcoming, accessible and inclusive environment.  Reporting to the Campus Security Supervisor, the Campus Security Team Lead plays a key role in training security officers—new, casual, and full-time—on standard operating procedures, licensing, and first aid requirements. The role supports the Campus Security Supervisor, ensuring the operational effectiveness of Security Officer Teams and assumes leadership in their absence. Responsibilities include reviewing SOPs, facilitating training and documentation, supervising officers, preparing, and reviewing reports, monitoring systems, managing incident response, delivering first aid, and coordinating referrals with internal and external partners. Knowledge of the CUPE 917 Collective Agreement is essential. The position also performs all duties of a Security Officer while serving as a front-line operational supervisor in support of the Security Campus Security Supervisor. Job Requirements Experience:  This position requires a level of experience equivalent to experience in University of Victoria Security, or experience working within a comparable environment including:  Law enforcement, emergency response, first aid, firefighting, ambulance services, search and rescue, social work, bylaw enforcement, lifeguarding, customer service roles with conflict resolution experience, or mental health roles is considered an asset. All Campus Security Team Lead must obtain and maintain a BC security worker license; Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector and must have and hold a valid class 5 or higher BC driver's license prior to commencing work. Specialized Knowledge/Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.  Certification in Advanced Occupational First Aid, Emergency Medical Assistant - First Responder (EMA-FR with Licensing, and as required by legislation and WorkSafe requirements must be obtained within the first three months of employment as a condition of employment.) Additional certifications are considered an asset. (e.g. De-escalation and critical incident management, psychological first aid, Trauma informed practices). The following are required within the first three months of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment: Advanced Occupational First Aid  Emergency Medical Assistant - First Responder (EMA-FR Licensing). Hold a valid class 5 or higher BC driver's license  Ability to work shift rotations, including day, afternoon, and night shifts.  WHMIS Certification (UVic-specific). Minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute. Other mandatory training as identified by the University of Victoria. Skills/Abilities:  Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and fostering an inclusive, respectful working and learning environment, with meaningful outcomes in equity, inclusion, and advancing truth, respect, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. Compliance with university policies, departmental codes of conduct, and the provincial Security Services Act. Experienced leader in guiding, resourcing, and coaching diverse teams under pressure, with strong communication skills to collaborate across groups, address sensitive issues, and enforce policies within federal and provincial regulations. Skilled in emergency management and crisis response, including triage, incident management, violence risk assessment, and response to fire, first aid, medical, and natural disaster emergencies. Proficient in handling confidential information under privacy legislation, managing mental health incidents, supporting Critical Incident Stress Debriefing, and applying trauma-informed practices with discretion and professionalism. Strong operational skills in incident reporting, information management, and security device monitoring, with proven ability to de-escalate conflicts, resolve problems, and maintain accurate documentation (minimum 35 wpm). Physical Requirements: Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods, lift and carry equipment or supplies as needed up to fifty pounds, and respond quickly to emergencies, including running or moving swiftly. Capability to carry out patrol duties, including climbing, performing first aid procedures, utilizing computers, riding bicycles, and managing dispatch. Additional Requirements:  Ability to monitor and operate security devices, including alarms, CCTV, and a dispatch center. Available to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and in adverse weather conditions. Able to work effectively within a team on rotating shifts in a 24/7/365 service while meeting staffing requirements. Employment contingent on a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check, given the safety-sensitive nature of the role. Continued employment dependent on successful completion of a six-month probation, mandatory training, and assessments. The following are considered assets: Experience as a University of Victoria Security officer. Knowledge of the CUPE 917 Collective Agreement and its appropriate application in a unionized environment.
