Job Title: Cook Employee Group: SEIU Department: Nutrition Services Reports To: Nutrition Services ManagerWage: $26.36 - $26.99 per hour JOB SUMMARY Purpose of the role: Reporting to the Nutrition Services Manager, the Cook will ensure all meals and nourishments are prepared and served in a safe and appropriate manner. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & SUCCESS CRITERIA - Performs all duties in accordance with the Mission Statement and policies and procedures of SJLCB. - Responsible for the preparation and production of resident food within the home, while following all standardized recipes, production sheets, therapeutics and Menu Modules/Nutribase computer programs. - Ensures proper portioning and presentation of all food within the home. - Prepares all menu items for meals ensuring quality in regard to taste, presentation and texture modification for resident safety. - Perform menu substitutions as necessary and recording any that may take place. - Monitors the quality of dietary supplies received and assists with the monitoring of stock levels. Will notify Manager if supplies are low and/or issues arise. - Ensures meals are ready as per facility schedule. - Ensures safe and effective usage of various kitchen equipment, including meat slicers, steamers, gas ovens grills, convection ovens, blast chillers, food processors, blenders, etc. - Assists with putting the food orders away. - Actively participates in special occasions and theme meal days. - Follows proper food handling techniques including but not limited to glove use, hand washing, temperature taking and recording, preventing cross contamination, etc. - Keeps work area clean, sanitary and uncluttered. - Follows all Policies and Procedures of the Home regarding quality assurance, fire, safety and infection control. - Rotating stock, labelling, dating and storing food properly. - Collaborating with various disciplines within the home to ensure resident dietary needs are met appropriately. - Ability to utilize/minimize leftovers. - Cleaning and sanitizing kitchen equipment, dishes and work areas. - Assist with orientation and training of new staff members as required. QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS - Proven experience as a Cook within an institutional, healthcare, restaurant or hospitality environment or Culinary Management diploma/certificate of qualification as a Cook issued by the Director of Apprenticeship from a recognized Cook’s program is required. - Current Brant County Health Unit Food Handler’s Certificate or equivalent is mandatory and required at time of application. - Familiarity with various diet types and texture modifications within long-term care required. - Previous cooking experience, previously in a long-term care home is an asset. - Red Seal Certification is an asset. - Have a general understanding of and willingness to work in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. - Excellent communication skills including the ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English. - Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. - Ability to use computer technology and software on a daily basis. - Adaptable to work that involves performing repetitive duties, climbing ladders, etc. - Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
