**Purpose of the role**: The Horticultural Therapy Intern will complete garden maintenance across the St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre campus through the coordination of volunteers and students to complete required horticultural tasks.

This position will be customized to meet the needs of the intern and will focus on providing professional practice in both horticultural therapy programming and therapeutic horticulture, including planning, facilitation, documentation and assessment. Working under the direction of a Registered Horticultural Therapist, the intern will have clear, meaningful and measurable work experience where they can learn and practice Horticultural Therapy competencies that are not available in the classroom setting.

All documented internship hours will count towards professional registration with the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA).

**KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & SUCCESS** CRITERIA**:

- Perform all duties in accordance with the St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre Brantford Mission, Vision, and Values and Policies and Procedures.
- Responsible for the organization and coordination of garden maintenance across the St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre and Stedman Community Hospice campus in order to ensure its completion.
- Supervise and train assigned volunteers, including organizing and assigning tasks by priority to a diverse group of individuals.
- Responsible for the ordering and inventory control of all necessary horticultural supplies, equipment and/or services within a defined budget and completing any associated administrative and budget reports.
- Work as a member of the interdisciplinary care team to provide exemplary care to all persons who live, visit and work on the St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre & Stedman Community Hospice campus of care.
- Foster an environment that is safe and homelike, in keeping with the Mission, Vision, and Values of St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre and Stedman Community Hospice.

**QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS**:

- Diploma or degree in horticulture, or related discipline, from a recognized institution.
- Certificate in Horticultural Therapy, from a recognized institution or Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association (CHTA) approved program.
- At least 3 years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, particularly working with vulnerable population in long-term care or hospice setting.
- Knowledge of horticultural procedures and appropriate seasonal horticultural tasks.
- Knowledge of current and emerging trends in technologies, techniques, issues and approaches.
- Ability to physically accomplish all outdoor year-round horticultural tasks (must be able to lift 50lbs) and be prepared to work in all types of weather conditions.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide diverse population of people.
- Ability to make procedural decisions and judgements on sensitive, confidential issues.
- Ability to complete horticultural tasks, including provision of HT programming planted materials, within a defined budget.
- Problem solving skills.

- Creative vision and design skills.
- Ability to create, compose and edit written materials.
