Your Opportunity: Alberta Health Services has an exciting medical leadership opportunity for a physician with training and experience in Public Health and Preventive Medicine to join our team as Provincial Medical Officer of Health (PMOH), Breast Cancer Screening (BCS). Reporting directly to the Provincial Lead MOH, Screening Programs, you will work in a dyad partnership with the Program Manager for the Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program (ABCSP), sharing responsibility for leading your team in developing, managing, evaluating, and improving programs and services. The PMOH, BCS leads efforts to engage healthcare providers and provides clinical support to service providers and clients/patients along the breast cancer screening pathway, helping ensure quality at every stage of the screening process. As a medical expert within the Screening Programs division of Provincial Population and Public Health (PPPH), you will work closely with Zone MOHs and other partners to understand local needs and leverage collective expertise to develop system-wide solutions. Additionally, you will support and contribute to local initiatives aimed at enhancing breast cancer screening practices. The PMOH, BCS is a member of the Clinical Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, ultimately accountable to the Senior Medical Officer of Health. In this capacity, you will work with other AHS MOHs and operational leaders to help advance department priorities including advancing health equity and collaborating with the Indigenous Wellness Core to help close the gap in Indigenous health outcomes. This role offers excellent flexibility allowing you to work remotely anywhere in Alberta while collaborating within a highly skilled, cohesive team. Description: The Screening Programs division promotes four provincial population-based cancer screening programs and two newborn screening programs, all designed to detect conditions early when treatment outcomes are more favourable. The division coordinates the operation of these programs in collaboration with partners and stakeholders. The PMOH, BCS provides leadership and clinical support to the ABCSP in a dyad relationship with the ABCSP Program Manager. The PMOH, BCS works with the ABCSP program team and other teams in Screening Programs including Screen Test, other leaders and providers of health care services along the screening pathway, Zone MOHs, and other program partners to ensure the diverse team of highly skilled professionals achieve excellence in carrying out the ABCSP’s shared and core accountabilities. The PMOH, BCS plays a critical part in ensuring the successful delivery of the ABCSP, working to enhance public health outcomes through effective leadership, expert consultation, and collaboration. Key responsibilities include Establishing and revising ABCSP program standards, clinical guidance, resource materials, and quality assurance and improvement processes related to breast cancer screening. Offering expert consultation to healthcare providers across the province regarding breast cancer screening. Working in collaboration with the Cancer Prevention and Screening Innovation team on advancements in breast cancer prevention and screening. Providing clinical direction and input to ABCSP provincial quality initiatives, including oversight of the program’s service provider feedback reports to support quality improvement. Supporting the ABCSP Program Manager in overseeing the administrative functions of the breast cancer screening program, ensuring the efficient operation of the team, and acting as a primary point of contact for the ABCSP.

Required Qualifications: Medical Doctor (MD) eligible for licensure in Alberta. Advanced training and experience in public health and preventive medicine, with a focus on population-based programs. Eligible for registration with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Experience providing consultative services for breast cancer screening programming or a similar program. Proven ability to develop innovative solutions for complex issues by analyzing and synthesizing diverse and complex information to inform strategic directions. Expertise in project planning, program implementation, evaluation, and quality improvement. Strong ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects to meet the needs of a dynamic work environment. Demonstrated success in building partnerships, resolving conflict, and fostering positive team relationships.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Accomplished verbal and written communication skills, enabling the effective delivery of key public health messages to diverse audiences, both medical and non-medical. This includes public speaking, media interviews, technical document development, and briefings for senior leaders. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders and interdisciplinary teams across a variety of programs and communities to advance population health objectives. Proven leadership and change management capabilities, with experience in decision-making, coaching, and inspiring confidence in others. Skilled in leading and managing organizational change. Committed to maintaining a healthy team working environment and ensuring that collective efforts align with broader team goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least two (2) years' experience as a Medical Officer of Health or two (2) years of involvement in population-based screening programs. Fellow of The Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) with specialty in Public Health and Preventive Medicine. Other combinations of clinical training and certifications (e.g. CCFP or FRCPC in another discipline with focused training in public health (e.g., MPH)) and applied public health practice may be considered.
