Job Summary

Bringing Calgary Public Library’s strategic plan to life, the Library Experience Assistant provides a full range of support services that help shape positive user experiences.
Duties include processing, shelving, and organizing library materials according to Library standards; supporting branch operational needs, including room and program set-up and takedown; and assisting members indirectly, by connecting them with others who can assist them, and directly, by answering wayfinding questions, sharing basic information about Library services and programs, and being attentive and responsive to the needs and expectations of Library users.

Responsibilities and Activities

Shape a Positive User Experience

  • Check-in incoming materials
  • Organize incoming and outgoing deliveries
  • Process and prepare holds for shelving
  • Pull materials, using lists or applying specific criteria or guidelines, for holds, weeding, and curated collections
  • Process pending transit lists and prepare materials for delivery to other locations and for use in mobile or outreach settings
  • Troubleshoot automated materials handling machines automated check-in issues, program room technology
Create a Welcoming Environment
  • Shelve Library materials, including general collections, holds, magazines and newspapers
  • Set up and take down library programs according to specific program requirements
  • Search for, report and help resolve collections issues, including missing library materials, duplicate materials, and overcrowded or bare shelves
  • Tidy library shelves, shift collections and shelf read
  • Maintain seasonal collections and temporary book displays
  • Assess and process damaged and outdated items, maintain RFID tags on items
  • Handle non-Library materials (e.g. donated materials, items mistakenly returned to the Library)
Engage with Users
  • Engage with members by being welcoming, friendly, and helpful, assisting members directly or referring them to others, as appropriate
  • Communicate positively about the Library and promote programs and services
  • Help members with wayfinding, using automated check-in, and locating specific library items, including holds
Apply Operational Procedures
  • Prepare and receive deliveries including Book Truck materials
  • Report safety and security concerns
  • Perform cleaning tasks including sanitizing toys and library equipment
  • Remove obstruction from library spaces and organize work room

Qualifications

  • General High School Diploma or GED

  • Pre-Employment Requirements:
    • Physical Demands Test
    • Successfully complete specified technology use tests (basic)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Computer Skills: Basic Technology Skills
  • Calgary Public Library Classification System i.e. Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to follow Health and Safety Guidelines
  • Good verbal communications skills; strong attention to detail; ability to problem solve, use good judgment, accuracy, independent work
  • Ability to work with people from all backgrounds and age groups

Working Conditions:
  • Lifting, pushing and pulling library materials, lifting and carrying up to a maximum of 10 kgs
  • Ability to squat, kneel, bend, raise arms above shoulders
  • Standing and walking for extended periods of time
  • Simultaneous and multiple priorities
  • Shift work required
