About the Saskatchewan Firearms Office: The Saskatchewan Firearms Office (SFO) plays a pivotal role in administering the Firearms Act within the province, ensuring public safety while promoting responsible firearm ownership. The SFO works closely with law enforcement agencies, government ministries, and community organizations to uphold its mandate. The establishment of the Saskatchewan Ballistics Lab furthers this mission by offering cutting-edge forensic and investigative services.

Position Overview: The SFO is seeking an innovative and technically adept Information Technology Specialist to lead and support the development, implementation, and maintenance of information technology solutions essential to the Office’s operations. This includes overseeing the rollout of the LIMS-plus program for the Saskatchewan Ballistics Lab, as well as managing various IT tasks critical to the organization’s success.

Key Responsibilities:LIMS-plus Program Development and Implementation:
  • Lead the integration, customization, and deployment of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS-plus) to support efficient workflows in the Saskatchewan Ballistics Lab.
  • Collaborate with lab personnel, external consultants, and other stakeholders to ensure the program meets operational needs and regulatory standards.
IT Infrastructure and Support:
  • Provide comprehensive IT support for the SFO, including hardware deployment, server management, and network maintenance.
  • Ensure the reliability, integrity, and security of all SFO systems, with a focus on protecting sensitive data and maintaining digital privacy.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues to minimize downtime and disruptions.
Strategic Planning and Project Management:
  • Identify IT needs and opportunities for improvement within the SFO and develop strategies to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Prepare and present business cases for new technologies and system upgrades, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and budgets.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with law enforcement agencies, IT vendors, and other stakeholders to stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices.
  • Act as a liaison between the IT team and other divisions within the SFO to facilitate effective communication and coordination.

Ideal Candidate Profile: The ideal candidate is a tech-savvy professional with a proven ability to manage complex IT projects in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. They have strong leadership skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a deep understanding of IT systems within law enforcement or forensic settings.

Due to the nature of this office the applicant must be able to work in environments that may include exposure to sensitive material, firearms, and active investigations. The successful candidate will obtain a heightened security clearance (RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance), criminal record check, and background checks.

Qualifications:
  • A degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience with LIMS or other laboratory management systems is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in hardware deployment, server management, and IT security.
  • Familiarity with privacy legislation and best practices in digital data protection.
  • Strong communication and project management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
Additional Requirements:
  • Successful completion of an enhanced criminal record check.
  • Availability to travel within the province as required.
