Job Summary

The Indigenous Health and Reconciliation Specialist plays a critical role in supporting better health outcomes for Indigenous patients at Hamilton Health Sciences. This position is responsible for informing program development and supporting the organizational approach to Indigenous health, including alignment of services, data collection, engagement and training of staff, and relationship building with the Indigenous community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve Indigenous health outcomes
  • Collaborate with healthcare teams to ensure culturally safe care
  • Build relationships with Indigenous community organizations and leaders
  • Provide education and training on Indigenous health and cultural safety
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures related to Indigenous health
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have a strong understanding of Indigenous history, culture, and social determinants of health. You will also have experience working with Indigenous communities, traditional healers, and Elders to build positive and mutually beneficial relationships. Additionally, you will have knowledge of relevant legislation, including Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in healthcare, particularly in Indigenous health, is an asset. Knowledge of hospital operations and healthcare delivery systems is also beneficial. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team, are essential.
