Civil Engineering Researcher

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled Civil Engineering Researcher to join our team. As a researcher in the Smart Structure Laboratory (CVISS), you will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects that apply computer vision and machine learning techniques to real-world civil engineering problems.

About the Role

We are looking for a researcher who can contribute to the development of mobile robotic sensing and analysis systems for infrastructure inspection and management, as well as human-robot interaction for collaborative inspection. Experience in drone development, including flight control systems like PX4, autonomous mission design, and execution, is highly valued. Additionally, expertise in computer vision, image recognition, and/or robotics is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

* Participate in research projects focused on developing mobile robotic sensing and analysis systems for infrastructure inspection and management
* Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers to deliver cutting-edge solutions that drive innovation in our field
* Develop and optimize 2D and 3D processing solutions that extract meaningful insights from visual data
* Work with industry partners to develop and apply graph networks/graph neural networks for flood modeling and flood hazard assessment
* Assist in the organization of relevant workshops and demos

About You
You hold an undergraduate, MASc, or Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Software Engineering, or System Engineering
* You have extensive experience in working with signal/imaging processing, including AI/ML libraries, and proficiency in software or tools such as Python, Matlab, LabView, or similar
* You have a proven track record of publications in the areas of machine learning, computer vision, image processing, or structural health monitoring
