Civil Engineering Researcher Position at University of Waterloo

The University of Waterloo is inviting applications for a graduate studies position in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Our lab, CVISSlab, focuses on practical, application-driven research, utilizing advanced technologies to integrate intelligence into the physical built environment.
We are currently recruiting for four positions: Robotics, Computer Vision, Nondestructive Testing, and Flood Modelling.
Robotics
The primary objective of this position will be to participate in research projects on the development of mobile robotic sensing and analysis systems for infrastructure inspection and management, as well as human-robot interaction for collaborative inspection.
- An undergraduate, MASc, or Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Software Engineering, or System Engineering is required.
- Familiarity with the Robot Operating System (ROS) 1 & 2, drone development, flight control systems like PX4, autonomous mission design, and execution are essential.
- Proven expertise in computer vision, image recognition, and/or robotics, including sensor fusion, mobile robotics, and comprehensive knowledge of drone hardware, sensors, and communication protocols are necessary.
Computer Vision
A key research objective for this position is designing, optimizing, and deploying 2D and 3D processing solutions that extract meaningful insights from visual data.
- An undergraduate, MASc, or Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or System Engineering is required.
- Strong machine learning development skills, experience with OpenCV, C++, or/and C#, and knowledge in image recognition and computer vision are necessary.
Non-Destructive Testing
Evaluating the quality and safety of various infrastructure using Non-destructive Testing (NDT) is the primary research goal for this position.
- An undergraduate, MASc, or Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent is required.
- Expertise in working with signal/imaging processing, AI/ML libraries, and extensive experience in NDT methods, including visual inspection, ultrasonic wave, and electromagnetic wave are necessary.
Flood Modelling
This position involves developing and applying graph networks/graph neural networks for flood modeling and flood hazard assessment.
- An undergraduate, M.Sc., or Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or other relevant fields is required.
- Experience in graph networks/graph neural networks, data-driven approaches for flood modelling and prediction, and proficiency in programming languages like Python, PyTorch Geometric, TensorFlow, and NetworkX are necessary.
Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience.
